Bear POWER Update
Bear Power is a two year college program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We are currently looking for Peer-Mentors to join our community effort of creating an inclusive college environment.
Rachel Heinz, Director of Bear POWER informed the dean that they have started the first admissions process for students, which is available online. The deadline is April 2, 2018. Nine students will start in January 2019. The website outlines the program, and has estimated costs. Rachel will attend a Midwest Inclusive Post-Secondary Alliance (MIPSA) meeting on April 20, at University of Missouri – St. Louis for a regional summit. Their inclusive program is SUCCEED. They will discuss best practices and have a session on inclusive residential life. Another current project is to recruit Bear Blazers, who would be students at MSU who would volunteer to provide individualized support and empower Bear POWER students in their college experiences. A Bear Blazer informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 21, 4:30-5:30 pm, PSU Room 308. Click on link for flyer below:

Kappa Delta Pi Members Volunteer at Elementary School Event
On Tuesday, Feb. 13th, Kappa Delta Pi sponsored a panel discussion of area principals and veteran teachers. Panelists provided interviewing tips and advice for first-year teachers. The event was well attended and students gained valuable information that will help them as they move into their teaching careers.
On Thursday, Feb. 22nd, Kappa Delta Pi members, along with KDP faculty advisor Dr. Kayla Lewis, volunteered at Weaver Elementary’ s Title I Family Night. Kappa Delta Pi was able to secure a $300 donation from Taco Bell to purchase supplies and prizes for the event. KDP members were able to work at different stations throughout the school and help families work together to build literacy and math related skills. Members were also able to serve dinner to the families who attended the event.

New Graduate Certificate in Dyslexia
In response to recent state legislature (effective 2018-19 school year) requiring schools to begin screening for dyslexia and providing interventions for students with characteristics of dyslexia, Dr. Kayla Lewis is working with Dr. Julie Masterson to develop a graduate certificate in dyslexia. The graduate certificate in dyslexia will help equip teachers with the knowledge necessary to work with students in this area.
CAEP Accreditation Update
The CAEP process is on time, on target and on budget (actually over budget just a tad), but that is fine, too. The Assessment Team and Writing Team met on March 2nd.
Meetings were productive and reassuring as we now have a first draft self-study ready for revisions, addition of evidence in the form of appendices, and ample opportunity to share for a broader review as early as tax day (we hope). We also have ample opportunity to continually revise the narrative and add documents, data, and supporting evidence over the next 10 months. Our self-imposed deadline to begin uploading the report is November 2018, so we have plenty of time for review by all interested parties. The deadline for submission is January 2019. The CAEP site team visit is scheduled for November 3 -5, 2019.
Continuous Improvement Seminars
Because we will be scrutinized by CAEP for the manner in which we assess our programs and students as part of our continuous improvement initiatives, we will implement a series of monthly Continuous Improvement Seminars to be held April – November, 2018. These will be open to all faculty, and department heads in COE and others throughout the EPPC will be invited to attend and work alongside Program Coordinators as we learn how to mine data from a number of different data bases. We hope to schedule the CIS sessions and send out invitations soon after Spring Break.
Personnel Updates
RFT has two searches underway for tenure track positions in Foundations. The committee is awaiting approval to bring in three people for interviews. RFT is also starting a search for a tenure track Literacy position to replace Dr. Deanne Camp who is retiring.
The RFT Department Head search committee continues to recruit applicants, as the position will remain open until filled.
Two positions in CEFS have been posted. The first consideration date for an Assistant Professor is March 12 and for a Clinical Instructor is March 19.
Dr. Stephen Kleinsmith will begin working for COE part-time in August 2018 and has already begun working on a limited basis as the Director of School and Community Partnerships, a key CAEP component, i.e., Standard 2.
Four candidates for a SAHE faculty position will soon be interviewing on campus.
Dr. Gilbert Brown has chosen to return to his faculty position in the SAHE program after June 30, 2018, completing a term of just under five years. The College of Education appreciates the hard work and contributions Dr. Brown has made with regard to a number of COE initiatives throughout his term as associate dean. Over the coming months the COE Leadership Council, Budget Committee, and Faculty Advisory Council will discuss options associated with the various units currently managed by the Office of Student Affairs. In addition, the Provost has designated the COE Dean’s Office as the unit accountable for a successful completion of the upcoming CAEP review.
