Update on Moving Back to Hill Hall
The College is on schedule to move back into the renovated Hill Hall beginning in August 2018. We do not have firm dates at this point, but are getting close and waiting for quotes from the moving companies.
Faculty leaving at the end of the spring semester should pack their belongings prior to their departure over the summer. The moving company will provide labels for boxes in early May and can provide additional boxes and tape, if needed.
CAEP Update
Several COE CAEP Writing Team members joined Chris Craig and Andrew Homberg at last week’s CAEP Conference in K.C. As a result, we now know we are not only on track but ahead of schedule in terms of writing the Self-Study reports. While the Self-Study is due nine months in advance of our November 3 – 5, 2019, Site Visit, our self-imposed deadline is a full year in advance, i.e., November 2018. This will give us plenty of extra time to make final additions prior to the official submission date of February 3, 2019.
The CAEP Writing Team will meet again on April 6, 2018, for a day-long session to merge all Standard Workgroup information into a second draft Self-Study. Those involved will be sent a meeting invite.
Meyer Alumni Center – Turner Family Hospitality Room
300 S. Jefferson Ave.
9:00 am. – 4:00 p.m.
Pastries, muffins, orange juice, water, coffee and tea will be provided in the morning.
Lunch will also be provided.
Each Standard Workgroup is diligently identifying evidence we currently have along with evidence we need to collect. During the April 6th Writing Team session we will create a master matrix of evidence and then write a third draft of the report. Soon after, we should be able to make the draft Self-Study public for a more general review.
Continuous Improvement Seminar (CIS) Series
The College of Education Dean’s Office is hosting a series of Continuous Improvement Seminars (CIS) focused on CAEP Standards and supporting evidence. Each CIS session will focus on “a robust quality assurance system to ensure continuous improvement by relying on a variety of measures, establishing performance benchmarks for those measures . . . seeking the views of all relevant stakeholders, sharing evidence widely with both internal and external audiences, and using results to improve policies and practices in consultation with partners and stakeholders” (Standard 5, CAEP, 2018).
Program coordinators, program faculty, and department heads are encouraged to attend each of the seven CIS sessions. You may RSVP to Ms. Rose Lee by March 29, 2018, or you may respond to the Outlook meeting invitations Rose will be sending out soon.
Either way, you are welcome to attend one, two, five, or (preferably) all seven CIS sessions. The last two sessions will be especially important, as we will be putting all the data and conversations in previous sessions to work en route to developing Continuous Improvement Quality Assurance Plans with evaluation components.
The schedule is as follows:
Thursday, April 12, 2018 | 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Bass Pro’s Sportsman’s Lodge, hearty Breakfast provided
“Building a Culture of Assessment.” Overview of data sources, collection, and analyses for on-going review of valid data on which decisions have been or are being made. Examples of program questions and data sources to answer questions will be provided. Dr. Keri Franklin will provide program-level data from University sources that can support your understanding of CAEP requirements and student learning. The session will provide time to review valid data at the EPPU and program levels from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to Public Affairs Scale surveys collected institutionally and disaggregated for program coordinators’ use. |
Friday, April 27, 2018 | 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Strong Hall 408, lunch provided
“Tackling Taskstream.” The Office of Accreditation, Assessment, and Data Management will provide information from a newly completed data base that houses student teaching information from supervisors, cooperating teachers and students. These data will be reviewed in tandem with Taskstream as participants learn how to run similar reports. The group will generate additional questions of benefit to programs to help faculty make informed decisions. Dispositions currently being used in Taskstream along with potential future dispositions will be addressed. [Note: We may have representatives from one of CAEP’s “poster programs” on hand to demonstrate how they used Taskstream to facilitate a very successful CAEP review.] |
Friday, May 4, 2018 | 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. PSU 313, hearty breakfast provided
“DESE Data Requests.” This will be a demonstration of the types of electronic data requests we can make to DESE. P-12 and DESE staff will be on hand to demonstrate how schools submit data to DESE and how we might obtain this information. Participants will learn how to make data requests through DESE’s electronic portal and discuss how to obtain data not readily intuitively accessible. Participants will learn how P-12 schools can work with programs and DESE to share data on our program completers who are working in schools. |
Thursday, May 24, 2018 | 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. PSU 313 hearty breakfast provided, plus $100 stipend to faculty who attend
“Continually Improving Our Quality Assurance System.” CAEP Standard 5 criteria will be addressed. This session will focus on “multiple measures that are relevant, verifiable, representative, cumulative and actionable.” The most recent draft of our Standard 5 Self-Study will be examined and refined based on program-level ideas and suggestions. Ways of tracking program completers into the workforce and obtaining employment information and job performance data will be addressed. Data from Digital Measures will be provided. This session builds upon the May 4th session. |
Thursday, June 14, 2018 | 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Kentwood Ballroom, hearty breakfast provided, plus $100 stipend to faculty who attend
“Really Reliable & Very Valid.” Decisions we make about our programs are only as good as the data on which we base our judgments. Understanding measures of reliability and validity associated with CAEP Key Assessments is important. Addressing reliability and validity when creating our own assessments will strengthen our ability to make informed decisions. In this two-hour time frame we will explore measures reported by ETS and Pearson, analyze a case study associated with the MEP, and address “home grown” assessments. |
Thursday, June 28, 2018 | 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. GLS computer lab, hearty breakfast provided, plus $100 stipend to faculty who attend
“Repetition is the Mother of All Learning.” In this session participants will be provided data from Taskstream, Digital Measures, Banner and other data sources to examine program rigor and quality. We will also discuss questions we would like to answer for which we may not currently have data. This exercise will help us improve the data sources we have and guide future development of studies, approaches, and data sources we need. |
Thursday, July 19, 2018 | 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Veridian on South Street, hearty breakfast provided, plus $100 stipend to faculty attendees
“Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan.” Here, we put it all together. Participants will review all the program and unit-wide data we have accumulated and shared during the previous six CIS sessions and then develop a CIQAPP = Continuous Improvement Quality Assurance Program Plan. Plans might focus on the placement of Key Assessments, unit-wide requirements, and/or program-level changes. Each plan will have an evaluation component, so we will know over time whether or not any changes are effective. A case study and sample plan will guide our thinking. |
Personnel Updates
Over the past few days, applicants for tenure-track faculty positions in foundations, counseling, and student affairs in higher education have been on campus interviewing with search committees, departments, et al. Search committees have done a terrific job screening applicants and making recommendations for interviews. We should be able to announce a number of new hires within a couple of weeks. We are also continuing to create funding plans for instructor and clinical faculty positions.
The RFT department head search remains open, and it now appears the process will continue throughout the spring semester. The search committee would welcome any networking opportunities. We will be using AERA online job placement services and networking at this spring’s annual meeting to recruit applicants.
The five-year administrative term for our associate dean for accreditation, assessment, and data management is coming to closure in July 2018. Dr. James Sottile will be returning to a faculty position in CLSE beginning August 1st. Much of the hard work Dr. Sottile’s team has completed over the past several years with regard to data sources will now enable us to produce reports to be used as evidence for the CAEP Self-Study. I appreciate Dr. Sottile’s dedication and management of our accreditation and assessment committees and work groups.
