Update on New Graduate Certificate in Dyslexia
The Graduate Certificate in Dyslexia curricular paperwork has been completed and approved by both program faculty and by the RFT Department. Program proposals have now started moving through the faculty governance process. If all goes as planned, we are hopeful that the courses will start being offered in spring 2019. We are excited to add this new certificate to the variety of options currently offered within the College of Education. Questions regarding the Graduate Certificate in Dyslexia may be directed to Dr. Kayla Lewis, Assoc. Professor, RFT, at 417-836-4196 or KaylaLewis@missouristate.edu

Collegiate Middle School Association Event
March was National Middle School Month. The Collegiate Middle Level Association (CMLA) partnered with Jarrett Middle School for two activities.
- Preservice teachers engaged in a question and answer session with a panel of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders and a head principal (Mr. Rob Kroll, who, coincidentally, completed his student teaching experience with Dean Hough as his university supervisor).
- Preservice teachers volunteered with the Do-It Yourself (DIY) Club. The club is headed by MSU Middle School Alum, Reagan Lux. CMLA members helped to create potted plants by helping Jarrett students to mix concrete and pack soil while constructing macramé holders for the plants.
The club is co-sponsored by Dr. Pamela Correll and Dr. Kimberly J. Stormer, Assistant Professors, RFT.

Faculty Awards – Reading, Foundations, and Technology
Several RFT faculty members were honored for their work in online teaching in 2017. Dr. Kayla Lewis won the Best in the Category of Content and Activities for this year’s Master Online Course Recognition Award. Dr. Ching-Wen Chang won the Best in the Category of Technology for this year’s Master Online Course Recognition Award.
Dr. Sarah Nixon was notified that she will receive the FCTL Teaching Award in Diversity for culturally responsive teaching.
Dr. Steven Jones received the 2018 Curtis P. Lawrence Master Teacher award honoring faculty in the Honors College for their teaching and mentoring students. He has been teaching sections of the Honors Colloquium class (UHC 397) for several years now. The name of the Colloquium he offers is “Education and the Seduction of Modern Culture.” The class first looks at the relation of education and modern culture through the pessimistic lens of Allan Bloom in the first section of his The Closing of the American Mind. Bloom doesn’t believe students can, or will, be able to take care of important texts and critical “big ideas,” but students are challenged to prove Bloom wrong by reading (and reading well) the entirety of Plato’s Republic. Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World closes out the readings of the course—a book sympathetic to Plato’s world even as it turns that world inside-out, leaving students to continue to question what it means to be educated in today’s world.
Drs. Lewis, Chang, Nixon and Jones will be presented their awards at the All-Faculty Recognition Reception on May 1st from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in the PSU Ballroom West.
Springfield Public Schools 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year and Other Awards
Congratulations to MSU-COE graduates……
Springfield Public Schools 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year |
Jean Lawson, special education teacher at Truman Elementary, was named SPS 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year during the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools’ annual Teacher Appreciation Banquet, Monday, April 16. The event was held at the Oasis Convention Center.
Lawson became interested in special education in high school when she volunteered as a camp counselor for people of all ages with disabilities. While her early career years took her in the direction of writing and developing curriculum, she never lost the desire to teach special education. That pull eventually led her to make a mid-career change after obtaining a master’s degree in special education and autism certificate from Missouri State University. Leading a class focused on intensive interventions in communication, socialization and sensor integration at Truman Elementary allows her to help students with autism be more comfortable in a world that can be very confusing while assisting them to develop skills that will open doors for their future. Lawson will go on to compete for Missouri Teacher of the Year at the regional level. The regional program is designed to focus public attention on excellence in teaching and to honor classroom teachers from across Missouri. Regional winners will advance to the state competition. The SPS Teacher of the Year selection committee received 168 nominations and interviewed five finalists for the 2018-2019 SPS Teacher of the Year. The other four finalists recognized during the event were:
