The 25th Graduate Interdisciplinary Forum honors founder
Incredible research, networking and a name change: What you can expect at this year’s IDF.
April 24, 2018 by University Communications
For 25 years, the Graduate Interdisciplinary Forum (IDF) has showcased fantastic students with groundbreaking research.
Dr. Frank Einhellig, provost, started IDF when he was dean of the Graduate College. On its 25th anniversary, it is being renamed the Frank Einhellig Interdisciplinary Forum.
Einhellig’s dedication to the event and the exemplary research performed by students showcases what IDF is all about.
The event is May 5 in the Plaster Student Union Ballroom. It begins at 8 a.m.
Honoring Einhellig
It is this type of rigorous research that sustains the IDF.
“Dr. Frank Einhellig, then dean of the Graduate College, started the IDF in 1994 because he recognized the importance of showcasing the stellar research being conducted by our graduate students,” said Dr. Julie Masterson, associate provost and dean of the Graduate College. “The IDF started with seven oral presentations and now includes just short of 200 students presenting their work in platform talks, posters and exhibits. Some of the talks are even done virtually because the student researchers did their degrees online or they are off campus for internship or practicum experiences.
“This event, along with commencement, is a high point for graduate education because all of us get to see the efforts of students and their faculty members come to fruition,” Masterson added. “It is fitting indeed that it be named for the visionary who likely expected that the event would someday become the impressive venue that it is.”
Student Research
Keslie Naffa-Wack’s research is just one of many projects that will be on display.
White-nose syndrome (WNS) is killing millions of bats. Fungus builds up on their bodies as they hibernate and causes serious side effects like dehydration and weight loss, which eventually leads to death.
The bats Naffa-Wack works with, big brown bats, are resistant to the fungus.
“We are trying to find what makes big brown bats different; what is it that makes this species so resilient? How can our findings be applied to other species that are suffering,” Naffa-Wack said.
Bats have an incredible effect on the economy. They are a natural pest-control because of the insects they eat. Bats also pollinate produce crops, like agave. Because of this, bats are worth about $22 billion economically.
With Naffa-Wack’s research, there is a chance the bat population will be restored.
Naffa-Wack does her research in the lab of Dr. Thomas Tomasi, professor of biology.
“IDF is a great way to spread the word about bats in general,” Naffa-Wack said. “Exposing people of different academic backgrounds to bats is extremely important. I feel as if informing the public of your research and how it affects their lives is the responsibility of every student.”
Dean’s Faculty Fellows Program: Call for Applications
The Dean invites interested faculty to apply by June 1, 2018, for the following Fellows positions:
- Dean’s Fellow for Marketing and Alumni Relations. This fellow will work with the Dean, department heads, and COE executive assistants to market programs and host alumni events. Marketing will include the development, coordination, and management of activities designed to recruit students into degree and certificate programs. Some recruitment events are sponsored by the University, but others will be specific to COE. Alumni relations will include coordinating University events such as Maroon Nation Balls in St. L., K.C., and Springfield; University Alumni Awards events; Homecoming events; and Public Affairs Ceremonies. In addition, “Creating a Legacy of Learning” events in St.L., K.C., and other locations will be developed, organized, and carried out by the fellow.
- Dean’s Fellow for International Programs & Study Away. This fellow will work with the dean, department heads, faculty, and University Office of International Education and Study Away to expand and extend programs in foreign countries, with a focus on China, and to make opportunities available for faculty and students. The fellow will be responsible for following academic protocols in support of programs and will promote international opportunities and Study Away programs by assisting faculty in the development of proposals.
Both of the above Dean’s Fellows will be evaluated on a semester by semester basis with a start date of August 13, 2018. The equivalent of one to three credit hours’ work effort may be made available, depending on time and effort agreed to by the faculty member, department head, and dean. Either release time or extra compensation will be made available, but not both. These Faculty Fellows positions are designed to increase enrollments in programs and promote the College internally and externally.
The COE Faculty Fellows policy reads: “When needs arise and resources permit, the Dean may select faculty to serve as fellows for a term of one year to advance college initiatives. These positions may be renewed at the Dean’s discretion. Remuneration is determined on an individual basis by following the COE Extra Compensation Policy.”
To apply, faculty must submit an essay (500 words or fewer) to the dean by June 1, 2018, addressing the following: (a) why the Fellows position is of interest, (b) strengths the faculty member would bring to the position, and (c), ideas the faculty member has regarding activities and events that would meet the goals of the position.
FAC members will review applications and provide feedback. Individuals will be notified by June 30, 2018, regarding the status of their applications. Both positions will be contingent on funding.
Associate Dean Search Committee
Since the two COE associate dean positions’ five-year terms expire in August 2018, the following plan will be followed as we extend and expand strategic initiatives in the College:
The former associate dean for Student Affairs will not be immediately replaced. Instead, at the recommendation of the Faculty Advisory Committee, Academic Advisement, Certification, Field Experiences, and Clearances will be grouped under the name Professional Education Services, and staff will report directly to the Dean, COE. The FAC also supported the creation of two Faculty Fellows positions for (1) International Programs and Study Away, and (2) Marketing and Alumni Relations. Both are described in the previous section of this Post.
We will form a search committee to begin the process of identifying candidates for the position of Associate Dean for Accreditation, Assessment, and Data Management. While that position will begin August 1, 2019, an interim position could be made available as soon as August 2018. Qualifications will include be not be limited to the following: knowledge of and documented experience leading accreditation efforts, documented ability to develop assessments, understanding of data base development, documented evidence of data analyses and reporting, experience supervising staff, and the ability and desire to work collaboratively with a team. In addition, this individual should be an effective communicator, self-motivated, proactive, and well organized.
If you would like to volunteer to serve on this search committee, please contact Dean Hough by May 14, 2018. A chair will be chosen from the group of volunteers, and the committee will be appointed on May 15th, given its charge by the Dean, and meet one or two times during the summer prior to the beginning of the Fall 2018 semester.
Moving Back to Hill Hall
According to Jen Cox and Shelly Cantrell in Space Management, all COE faculty and staff offices assigned to Hill Hall will be moved back to the newly remodeled building in early August 2018, prior to the beginning of the Fall 2018 semester. For this to occur, faculty and staff will need to pack sometime after May 18, 2018, and before August 1, 2018. If you are teaching summer school, you may want to pack after the summer session; however, if you are not going to be working from your office during the summer 2018, you will need to make sure your office is packed before movers arrive circa August 1, 2018. Space Management will provide boxes, tape, and other packing materials upon request. Please make those requests directly to Ms. Rose Lee, Executive Assistant to the Dean. Space Management will not pack computers; therefore, we will need to pack our own. Even the Dean is packing his own. If anyone needs advice regarding computer packaging, you may call Ms. Lee for assistance. Individuals’ names and Hill Hall room assignments / numbers must be clearly written on all boxes packed for moving, preferably on index cards taped to the boxes. Rose has extra index cards for anyone needing them.
COE Living Learning Community Welcome Social
COE Living Learning Community Welcome Social
August 17, 2018
3:30-5:00pm
Plaster Student Union
Jessica Bendure is directing our educators’ LLC. She sends the following invitation: “The College of Education and Secondary Education majors have a Living Learning Community where freshman who are COE/SEC majors live together on the same floor in Blair-Shannon. The students have targeted first-year experiences that help them acclimate to the university and make connections with the COE from the moment they step on campus. The LLC is a great resource to gain new recruits for your student organizations.
I am looking for representatives from each student organization to be present at our COE Living Learning Community Welcome Social that will occur August 17thfrom 3:30-5:00 pm in the PSU. I was hoping you could reach out to your officers now before students leave for the summer to let them know we would love them to join us the Friday before classes start to welcome our new students.
You can contact me via email jbendure@missouristate.eduto let me know who will be representing your organization at the Welcome Social. As the time approaches I can send reminder emails etc. to keep the event organized and well attended!
If you have any other questions about the LLC don’t hesitate to ask! The first two years have been successful and have shown an increase in retention rates and GPA’s vs. students who do not participate in an LLC.”
Middle School MAP Conference
The Collegiate Middle Level Association (CMLA) partnered with TRIO Student Support Services to host the annual Middle School MAP Conference. Over 300 local eighth graders from Jarrett Middle School and Reed Academy came to Missouri State to attend sessions that were designed to provide remediation for skills needed for them to be successful on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP). The eighth graders were allowed to choose 4 sessions created by middle level preservice teachers. In the midst of attending sessions, the students attended a presentation directed by Jordan Hoskin, Mental Health and Counseling graduate student/TRIO coordinator, about summer learning and scholarship opportunities, ate lunch in Garst and Blair Shannon Dining Halls, and took a campus tour. The event was funded by Student Funding Allocation Council (SOFAC) and the College of Education. CMLA is co-sponsored by Dr. Pamela Correll and Dr. Kimberly J. Stormer.
