Staff Changes Effective August 1, 2018
Dean Hough held a staff retreat on July 12, 2018. Earlier today Dean Hough sent the following memo to those who were invited to the retreat:
To: COE Staff
From: David Hough, Ph.D., Dean
Re: Staff Retreat on July 12, 2018
Date: July 17, 2018
Thanks to all who were able to attend our 2018 COE Staff Retreat on July 12th. The conversations, questions, recommendations, concerns, views, opinions, and comic relief resulted in a number of items the Leadership Team has taken into consideration.
First and foremost, we are changing Dr. Kleinsmith’s title to “Court Jester!” The job description will follow, but it won’t matter much. . . . (Thanks to everyone for helping make the retreat an enjoyable and productive event. And thanks, Dr. K for all you are doing for the MSU COE!)
Second, we have addressed the need for an administrative assistant for our Professional Education Advisement arm of the COE Professional Education Services unit. Amy McKee will move from CEFS to her former role in advisement effective August 1, 2018. Amy met with me, Juli Panza, and Dr. Cunningham earlier today, and we have worked out the details.
Third, per our conversations focused on balancing duties and responsibilities, we have decided to move Marian Green to CLSE to provide administrative support to that unit effective August 1, 2018. Dr. Satterfield, Marian, and I met today to review the details associated with this move. Her office will be in PCOB.
Fourth, Leslie Champagne will provide administrative assistance to Teacher Certification and Field Experiences beginning August 1, 2018. We are not yet certain where she will be stationed in the renovated Hill Hall; however, for the short-term, Ms. Champagne will be in Hill 211.
Fifth, the COE technical support staff will report directly to me, beginning immediately. Offices will be in Hill Hall and PCOB. All requests for technical help should be directed to Sharon Lopinot beginning immediately.
Last, please feel free to contact me directly at any time with questions or concerns.
Bear POWER Summer Leadership Retreat
Rachel Heinz, Director of Bear POWER, and Brittany Knebel, Bear POWER Graduate Assistant, provided the following photos and information regarding the retreat:
The Bear POWER Summer Leadership Retreat was held June 24-26, 2018, as the final part of the admissions process. We are excited to share that we will have 8 students in our first Bear POWER cohort, who will be starting in January 2019. Bear POWER is a new inclusive post secondary program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities starting at Missouri State.
During the retreat, students stayed on Missouri State campus for three days, and two nights to experience college life. Applicants attended a Springfield Cardinals game, participated in a service learning project with the CASL office and the campus gardens, attended a Kinesiology lecture and lab class with Dr. Rebecca Woodard, toured the Meyer library, rock climbed at the Foster Recreation Center, created vision boards in partnership with Abilities First/Art Inspired, and had a scavenger hunt.
Students quickly developed friendships with each other, and with Bear Blazer student mentors, creating a wonderfully close-knit dynamic. Volunteer training was led by ARC of the Ozarks and our Bear Blazers had awesome feedback about their experiences at the retreat. The support that students offered each other gave them the confidence to accomplish tasks and goals they weren’t sure of before the retreat. When prompted to present their vision boards to family and faculty, several students were unsure if they wanted to participate. However, every student presented, and to a round of applause.
The retreat was a life-changing experience that set the stage for future success. We could not be more excited for our first cohort of Bear POWER students to start at Missouri State University!
