“Welcome to Summer School”
College of Education Spring 2018 Graduation Reception
The 2018 COE Graduation Reception was well attended by approximately 400 people: faculty, staff, graduates, family and friends. Dr. Kevin Kopp, Exec. Director of Elementary Education, Nixa Public Schools, entertained the group with his presentation titled “The Greatest Show on Earth”.
Career Pathway Support Policy (for Instructors & Clinical Faculty)
On June 1, 2018 the Faculty Advisory Council approved the following draft policy. The policy will be presented to the COE Budget Committee and Leadership Council at upcoming meetings.
When funds are available, the dean in conjunction with the department head, may support instructors or clinical faculty members to enroll in courses as part of a terminal degree program. Support may include reduced teaching assignments, flexible scheduling, and alternative course delivery or “modalities.” To qualify for Career Pathway Support, individuals must provide documentation of acceptance into a terminal degree program at an R-1 IHE approved by the dean and department head. Support may not exceed six fall-spring semesters but may include a semester or summer with no teaching assignment to fulfill a residency requirement. After the terminal degree has been awarded, Career Pathway Support recipients are expected to apply for a tenure-track faculty position within the COE at the first opportunity made available. If the Career Pathway Support recipient is not selected for a tenure-track faculty position, the individual has no other obligation to the COE unless otherwise mutually agreed to by the department and the individual. However, if the recipient applies to another IHE before applying to the MSU COE, reimbursement to MSU for the CPS shall be made. Instructor or clinical faculty applicants must submit a written request of 300 words or fewer to the dean that includes the following: IHE and program to which the individual has been accepted, anticipated beginning date of first class, reason for choosing this program and career path, anticipated completion date, explanation of how residency requirements will be met along with how course work will be completed, e.g., Saturdays, online, weekdays away, et cetera.
Associate Dean Search Underway
The COE search committee charged with recruiting and screening candidates for the position of associated dean for accreditation, assessment, and data management has met with Dean Hough, and the position is now posted. The position will be open until filled with a flexible start date, depending on when the successful candidate can begin assuming duties and responsibilities. In the meantime, we will appoint an interim associate dean to begin on August 1, 2018. Interested individuals should contact the Search Committee Chair, Dr. Emmett Sawyer, before June 25, 2018, and provide a one-page letter of interest and CV. The search committee will review all applicants for the interim associate dean position and present their list of strengths and weaknesses to Dean Hough by June 29, 2018.
Dean’s Faculty Fellow
Dr. Gilbert Brown has been selected as the Dean’s Faculty Fellow for International Programs and Study Away. Dr. Brown has been the point person for COE’s involvement in the China program for several months. His fellows assignment will begin in August 2018, as he implements the following agenda detailed in his proposal:
Work with faculty and department heads to develop 3+3+1 and 2+2 undergraduate programs with Chinese Universities
Teach courses for International students in partnership with COE faculty
Serve as liaison between the vice president for research and development and international program and COE personnel
Expand and extend partnerships with Saudi Arabian faculty and COE faculty
Implement the following five recommendations:
(1) Explore developing a COE proposal to establish a 2+2 program with Hainan Normal University for the 2019-2020 academic year; (2) Develop a white paper on establishing an International Education Department or Academy; (3) Partner with faculty in each department to develop undergraduate and faculty study away programs every two years; (4) Develop a Normal Institution Conference: Past, Present, and Future Directions; and (5) Explore Grant opportunities to provide funding for projected Conferences, Dual Degrees, and Faculty Exchange Programs.
