LC members discussed the status of our CAEP Standard 5 narrative. Every year since 2013, we have submitted an Annual Report updating progress in addressing AFIs cited in the 2013 NCATE report. The current AR documents consistent activity that should put us in very good standing for the CAEP review in November 2019. LC reviewed various Power Points developed by Dean Hough related to this standard. The CAEP Writing Team is working on documentation at the advanced levels. Two more Continuous Improvement Seminars will be held this fall and another two or more will be held in the spring and possibly more in the summer 2019.
Stephen reported that recruitment and partnerships are going well. Per the Dean’s request, he will be working on forming a Dean’s Advisory Council consisting of educators, administrators and community people. The goal is for “A Bear in Every Building”. Once formed, they will meet monthly. He has planned a professional development meeting for staff on September 18, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. There will be a speaker and video. Lunch will be provided. He asked for updated program brochures and is willing to assist with them if needed. Juli gave him one that is ready to use.
James discussed Bear Partnership. He went with Denise and Stephen to a 12-school district conference in Monett. They talked for fifteen minutes on “Grow Your Own (teachers)”. Reeds Spring has asked for a meeting to discuss it further. Hollister is also interested. The purpose of the program is to bring high school sophomores or juniors to campus for a week in the summer. Students are introduced to the campus, live in the dorms, attend an ACT prep program, attend sessions on financial aid, the COE Living/Learning Community and other things. He has received letters from the first group expressing what they thought about the program. James said one of the students from the previous year is now attending MSU.
Ximena talked about the Golden Thread Project. This project is being funded by Pete Herschend and involves finding the characteristics of a good teacher, which would eventually involve surveying high school and college students. The project is in the infancy stage.
Stephen Kleinsmith volunteered to be the “go to” person for the new electronic message boards on the second floor. He will work with one of the COE’s graduate assistants, Enuma.
Ximena will be the administrator over the COE Assessment Committee.
After a discussion, it was decided to dissolve the COE Recruitment and Marketing Committee since Stephen Kleinsmith does most of this.
Anyone interested in attending the Making Your Statement in a Digital World seminar today from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m., needs to register through My Learning Connection by noon.
Sharon will be sending information out soon on COE Homecoming Events. October 19th will be the One-Room Schoolhouse Scholarship Recipient Recognition. The Dean will also be having a COE tent with food and games on Saturday, October 20th.
Russ Brock handed out flyers on the Southwest Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year banquet. Finalists are announced in late June. Their committee is discussing having semifinalists and finalists next year.
Around the Table
Larry Dudley
He is making headway on tech support requests. They are getting a screen in the graduate assistant room that will work with show them how their information for the electronic message boards will look before posting.
James Satterfield
On September 4th, the RFT Department Head Search Committee will have a phone interview with a candidate.
Emmett Sawyer
Their office has been contacted by over 60 people regarding the Dyslexia Certificate. Regarding the search for the Associate Dean, they have numerous applications. The search committee will meet soon.
Janice Duncan
In the past, for grades 7 – 12, the class size was limited to 30 students. Now, if they get more, classes are split and extra people are hired to teach the extra class (es).
Joanna Cemore Brigden reported for Denise Cunningham
ELE voted to eliminate the emphasis area requirement for the BS Ed degree. This reduces their total hours to 121. Denise met with Dr. David Rohall, Department Head of Sociology/Anthropology, to discuss an undergraduate certificate between CFD, Sociology, and Criminology – Youth Delinquency Services (name not determined yet). This would be a 12 hour certificate to help provide support to those individuals wanting to work with youth in the criminal justice system.
Dennis Lancaster
He asked if Bear Partnership could be replicated in West Plains. They do get a number of students from the St. Louis area and the campus has a residence hall. The Dean will arrange to have a focus meeting to discuss it.
Russ Brock
Governor Parsons spoke passionately about education at the Commissioners Conference which was held the end of July. He is also very involved in working on a preventative program for students to keep them from dropping out and would like to see a program in every high school and state. Last year ATLL ended in the red. This year they are in the black. They are making good partnerships. They have an Advisory Committee and meet in the fall and spring to discuss school needs. They received a $27,265.00 grant from DESE for the Pathways for Teachers Externship Program. Russ, Marci Dowdy and Jana Loge will facilitate the grant for teachers and counselors to participate in project based learning training and lesson plan development. Before classes started, they held some professional development classes for Greenwood faculty. Dean Hough asked Russ to reach out to the deans and departments for partnerships.
Karen Engler
MEES training went well. Larry videotaped the training. The videos will be available for those who could not attend. They are now planning for spring and want to reach out more.
Juli Panza
Spring schedules come out on Saturday and advisors will start working with students on Tuesday. She went to House Calls last night and talked with students in the COE Living/Learning Community. It is doing well so far. The Majors Fair is September 20, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., PSU. She needs faculty to attend. Since LC is not meeting on the 20th, the Dean asked members to try to attend it during that time. Fall 2018 Showcase is Saturday, October 6, 9:30 – 2:00 p.m., at PSU. Students will be allowed to tour Hill Hall.
Travis Marler
Travis is using the new student/faculty database system and it is working well. All information needed is in the same location.
Kim Dubree
Almost all of the fall student practicum students are placed. They are starting on student teacher placements for the spring.
Dean Hough
He received an email from Rachelle Darabi regarding students who have more than 100 hours and have left the university without a diploma. They have planned an event to work through the degree audits and find ways to get those students back on campus. The event, Mission Diploma, is October 11th, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Juli was asked to contact Rachelle regarding this. We are on board but not sure if the people she requested from our college to attend will be able to be there. We want to do it right.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:53 a.m.
