A Bear in Every Building
Dr. Stephen Kleinsmith, COE director of school and community partnerships, is busy analyzing data from his meetings with program faculty. In a couple of weeks he should be poised to share a few ideas based on common themes that have emerged. Already, though, a terrific idea is being considered: to identify COE alumni in schools across Missouri who will work with us to recruit students into professional education programs. We are calling it “A Bear in Every Building.” Here’s what Dr. K. has to say thus far:
“Sometimes if you listen to others close enough, a simple comment can quickly turn into a good idea. Then when the idea is put into action, it turns into gold. Well, that’s what has happened with Dr. Nate Quinn’s (one of our professors) comment and Dean Hough’s idea… “A BEAR in Every Building!” Similar to the U.S. having ambassadors representing our country throughout the world, here, the COE will have a BEAR representing us in every school building throughout the State of Missouri. This is the “what” we’re planning on implementing… the “how” to execute this golden idea is something still being developed. When it comes to ideas, the “what” trumps the “how” every time! So, stay turned… we’ll keep you posted as the plan develops.”
In sum, COE will work with the MSU Office of Alumni Relations to study the feasibility of hosting a series of receptions across our State for professional educators who are MSU alumni. We would ask our alumni to actively work with fellow educators to promote education as a promising, fulfilling career. The ultimate goal would be to compel high school graduates to attend MSU, become an educator, and return to their hometown to work.
Missouri School Boards’ Association (MSBA) Now Offering IHE Memberships
The Missouri School Boards’ Association is now offering memberships to IHEs. “We have big goals to increase educational attainment in Missouri. One of the ways that we can do this is by collaborating with our K-12 partners to reach more students, families, and educators. This is one reason why it’s important for our higher education institutions to become Affiliate Members of the Missouri School Boards’ Association (Zora Mulligan, Missouri Commissioner of Higher Education.) The MSU College of Education has joined and will participate in upcoming events. If you have an interest and would like to be involved, please contact Dean Hough.

High School Math Requirements Changed
The minimum math requirement for graduation from a Missouri high school is 3 credits, and 3 math credits are required for admission to MSU.
By Legislative action the state has now decided that a student in high school may elect to use computer science as one of the previously required math credits. The statute requires that “before July 1, 2019, DESE [will] develop a high school graduation policy that allows a student to fulfill one unit of academic credit with a district-approved computer science course for any math, science, or practical arts unit required for high school graduation…..” “The parent of each student who chooses to take a computer science course to fulfill a 4th unit of math shall sign and submit a document acknowledging that taking a CS course to fulfill a 4th unit of math may have an adverse effect on college admission decisions.”
Discussions are currently underway regarding college admission requirements. Stay tuned…
Shaanxi Normal University Students Visit Satterfield Family
On Labor Day weekend, 14 students from Shaanxi Normal University in Xi’an, China, their chaperones, Daezia Smith and Jinzi Fan from MSU International Studies program, visited the Satterfield family for a traditional American BBQ. After the BBQ, students taught the Satterfield family how to make beef dumplings. Michelle Satterfield has been working with the students to teach them about the United States’ education system. The SNNU students are undergraduate education majors in their third year of their program. While visiting, the students take education classes, English classes, and visit schools in the Springfield area. They created engaging presentations and presented at John Thomas School of Discovery in Nixa, and Westport School and Central High School in Springfield. The program is one of the first steps the College of Education is taking in creating an international collaboration with China.
