Memorials – Lonnie Barker – Leon Bradshaw
COE lost two emeritus faculty recently: Dr. Lonnie Barker Jr., passed away on September 28, 2018. Dr. Barker was professor of Educational Administration at MSU from 1972 to 1998. His candor, wit and creative expertise impacted hundreds of school leaders through the Ozarks, State of Missouri, and beyond. Known simply as “Lon” by friends and family, he is survived by his wife, Pauline, who taught second grade at the Greenwood Laboratory School for many years. Memorial services were held at 2:00 PM today.
The Dean’s Office was informed via social medial that Dr. Leon Bradshaw passed away earlier this week. Dr. Bradshaw taught for many years in the Counseling Program at MSU. In this role he influenced many students who later became professors and practicing counselors. No details regarding memorial services are available at this time.
3 Minute Thesis – October 26, 2018
The Graduate College Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT)
4th annual 3MT Competition will be held Friday, October 26, 2018
The 3MT competition will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018, in Glass Hall, Room 101. The competition began promptly at 5:00 pm. A reception with refreshments for participants, judges, other audience members including faculty/administrators and community leaders followed from 6:30 – 7:30 pm.
The winner of the 3MT competition was announced during the evening and will represent Missouri State University at the regional competition during the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) annual conference in April.
What is a three-minute thesis (3MT)?
Oral communication of a student’s research to an educated layperson is often lacking in graduate programs. The University of Queensland developed a program where students summarize their research in 3 minutes or less, using pre-determined guidelines. The format is one where students make a presentation in less than 3 minutes; longer presentations are disqualified. Missouri State University is a participating university in this world-wide competition. For more information please see the link provided: MAGS 3MT
Eligibility and process
The competition is open to any graduate student with a research project, thesis or non-thesis (seminar) project. Departmental competitions to determine those who compete at the college level are encouraged, but colleges determine how their nominees are selected.
Each college dean (or designee) can nominate students to present at the university-wide competition, usually after holding a college-wide competition. Each college can nominate two (2) students. Alternatively, for those colleges holding a college-level competition, 30% of the entrants in each college competition can be nominated, up to six (6) contestants. Colleges may also submit names of ranked alternates, in case additional slots are available. College nominations must be sent to Dr. Doug Gouzie at DouglasGouzie@MissouriState.edu by 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2018. The program of presenters will be posted on this webpage by 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2018.
Graduate students interested in this competition should check with their advisors or college offices as to how and when the college competitions will be conducted.
Each nominated graduate student will provide, ahead of time, one PowerPoint title slide (which can only have student name, graduate program and presentation title – no pictures, images, graphs, etc.) plus one slide to accompany the presentation (no animation allowed). A panel of judges will score the students to determine the winners. Nominees must submit their two (2) slides to GradCollegeServices@MissouriState.edu by noon on Thursday, October 18, 2018.
Colleges or graduate program directors/coordinators wishing to learn more about how to hold a competition should contact Dr. Doug Gouzie at the Graduate College office at 417-836-5335.
