Hill 339

Notes

In attendance:

David Hough, Russ Brock, Denise Cunningham, Kim Dubree, Janice Duncan, Karen Engler, Judy Gregg, Stephen Kleinsmith, Dennis Lancaster, Travis Marler, Juli Panza, James Satterfield, Emmett Sawyer, Ximena Uribe-Zarain, Rose Lee, Sharon Lopinot

Guests:  Lisa Clark, Duany Goyes

Lisa Clark, Director of Planned Giving and COE Liaison, attended LC to discuss the alumni awards that will be given out at the Bears of Distinction Banquet on June 22, 2019.  The deadline for nominations is December 1, 2018.

The categories are:
–     Life Time Achievement
–     Outstanding Alumni Award
–     Outstanding Young Alumni Award
–     Alumni Award for Excellence in Public Affairs
–     Bear of Excellence Award
–     Volunteer of the Year Award
–     Award of Appreciation
Lisa asked everyone to look at the awards and think about nominating someone.  She went on to say the next Capital Campaign is in the silent phase.  Gifts, pledges, etc., will be counted toward the goal from December 2012 -2022.  There will be major campaign kick offs prior to the start.  John Goodman has agreed to be a leader in the campaign.  Dean Hough will attend a campaign workshop with the other deans November 27th.  Once the campaign is officially started, he will talk to potential and current donors.  Lisa recommended everyone talk to people they know who are supportive/passionate about MSU/COE.  She asked that you email her names and she will get in touch with them.

Stephen Kleinsmith will be working on the nominees for the alumni awards.  He also has someone that will be able to create some short videos for us.  He will be in touch with everyone for ideas.

The Budget Committee meets tomorrow.  The Dean will discuss prioritizing funding for various items.  There are currently no funds for furniture, extra travel, or sabbaticals.  There are some accounts with funds that have not been used over the past three years such a Faculty Special Programs and Faculty Research, for example. He will also ask Budget Committee members if there is a need for addition line items such as funding for awards/recognitions.

Dr. K led a discussion focused on the five themes that emerged from his meetings with program faculty focused on marketing and recruitment. Specifically addressing the “Increasing Enrollment in the College of Education” document, volunteers are now assigned to one of the themes: 1 = Dr. K., 2 = department heads, 3 = department heads, 4 = Dr. Hough, 5 = Juli Panza.  Each of these “responsible persons” will identify a team of individuals to work on the theme each “lead” has volunteered to facilitate.  Dean Hough will hand this document out at the Administrative Planning Mini-Retreat on Monday.  This document will be discussed at upcoming LC meetings.

Two emails from the COE inbox were discussed.  One was from a doctoral candidate from a private university requesting information for their dissertation.  Dean Hough explained the process is to have an approved IRB attached, before anyone releases any information.  Dean Hough will have Sharon respond to the email accordingly.  The second email was from a teacher at a rural high school who took her FTA students to a FTA state meeting in Columbia and stated they were looking for someone from MSU/COE and could not find anyone.  Denise and Juli attended last year and there was not much interest so did not go this year.  Denise did not want to respond, so Juli agreed to respond that they were aware, but due to the lack of response last year they did not go.  She is willing to invite the student group to go through the MSU tour and have a meeting with them at Hill Hall following the tour.  Juli did receive a request for this from someone at Branson High School and has made plans to bring the students in.

The CAEP Writing Team have completed final drafts of the diversity and technology reports as well as Standards 1 and 2. They are finishing final edits to Standard 3 and will complete Standard 4 very soon.  Ximena and Travis continue to organize and link three levels of evidence to facilitate the site team’s review of our Self-Study.  In sum, we are precisely on track and in a very good position well ahead of the February 2019 submission date.  Ximena and Travis are also breaking down the ACT scores by English/Reading/Math/Composite.  They are currently comparing it to the MSU scores.

Requests for fee changes are due to Dean Hough soon.  A suggestion was made for our college to charge students a fee to help with accreditation costs over the years.  A meeting will be scheduled to start the discussion soon.  It is probably too late to request a fee change this year but they can begin working on one for next year.  Regarding the CAEP visit November 3 – 5, 2019, the Dean would like to form a logistics team.  He will have a conversation with Suzanne Hull about this very soon and will send the ‘Logistics Team’ to the spring CAEP meeting.

Around the Table
Dean Hough

The Dean attended a STEM Conference with Dean Jahnke in Kansas City sponsored by the Missouri Chamber of Commerce.  Attendees were people from higher education, public schools, and the business community.  Evidently, DESE has a contract with a STEM professional development group to support schools who want to provide training for teachers.  The Dean will get the information and share it with everyone.

Russ Brock
The ATLL has consultants that have been working collaboratively with school districts in our region to implement various programs such as PBIS and PLC as well as implementing effective teaching and learning practices that have been part of the Collaborative Work and Missouri Model District work.  DESE has been moving in the direction of combining it all into what is now being called The Continuous Improvement System.  The ATLL is now in the process of meeting with districts currently implementing the PLC model to invite them to continue the collaboration work but also to begin implementing the other components of effective teaching and learning practices, which will be supported by our consultants.

James Satterfield
The RFT Department Head Search Committee has a candidate coming to campus on November 29 – 30, 2018.  He and Denise are moving along with Bear Partnership.  They are working with Cassville and McDonald County and need to get back to Lee’s Summit, Pattonville, and Riverview Gardens.

Denise Cunningham
The Director of Bear POWER search committee completed final interviews for the position.  Their department has two ongoing searches; one for CFD and one for Child Life.  The Child Life search will need to be extended due to no applications received.  Denise wanted to discuss MEES training with the group.  They have had numerous calls questioning how to implement the program with their students they supervise.  A number of CTs have not gone through the MEES training and it is a problem.  This is more of a problem with people out of the area.  There were a number of suggestions:
–     Target the areas of those who do not attend
–     Contact superintendents regarding the importance
–     Use ZOOM
–     Pay a stipend as an incentive for those who complete the training
–     Put it in our requirements
–     Have principals complete the training and train their people
The Dean will explore the problem with principals first and then work with Denise.  Denise said they are also having problems with the two bulletin boards on the third floor.  Psychology puts information up on both.  After a discussion it was decided for her to talk with the department head and see if psychology could use one and RFT/CEFS the other.

Emmett Sawyer
Six students along with two faculty, attended the Middle School Conference in Florida.  The students gave presentations and all went well.  The search committee for the associate dean has completed phone interviews on the current applicants.

Karen Engler
She is willing to help with the problem regarding the MEES training.

Janice Duncan
They will have their accreditation visit this spring.  There is a new task force consisting of Greenwood alumni working on how to get the message out to people about Greenwood.  They completed a survey and had 400 responses.

Kim Dubree
Yesterday the EPPC approved MSU enrollment for the Rap Back FBI Finger Printing System Program which will start in Fall 2019.

Sharon Lopinot
The COE Fall 2018 Graduation Reception is:
December 14, 2018
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Speaker:  Matt Morrow, President, Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce
Invites will be mailed to COE graduates soon.  Everyone is invited to attend.  Commencement is the same day at 1:30 p.m., JQH Arena.

Dean Hough
He asked Russ about the timeline for the Regional Teacher of the Year selection.  ATLL accepts nominations in the spring, which are completed in June.  Selection is decided in July and the banquet is held in August.
