Dean Hough met with Jim Baker, Gilbert Brown, James Satterfield, and others yesterday who informed him that they would like the University to consider moving forward with a proposal for an Ed.D. program in Higher Education. James Satterfield is working with Gilbert Brown on drafting a proposal. Conversations regarding staffing for this proposed program as well as others such as the dyslexia certificate ensured. The Dean reminded the group that COE has a Strategic Hiring Process that should be used when considering new positions.
Tonight is the first Dean’s School & Community Advisory Council meeting, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Kentwood Hall. There should be 15 – 20 people in attendance. The Dean’s Student Advisory Council will meet October 30, 2018. Information gathered from these meetings will be shared at future LC meetings.
Stephen has finished meeting with program faculty regarding recruitment, retention and enrollment. He handed out a summary of ideas to increase enrollment in our college and mentioned that we are not limited to just what he has developed. Stephen asked everyone to look at the ideas and bring information to the next LC meeting. He asked everyone to be specific on what they can be responsible for and the timeline. This information will be discussed at the School & Community Advisory Council meeting tonight. Dean Hough noted that the focus of the CAC will be marketing and recruitment to increase the number of high school graduates who choose education as a career.
Juli met with an undergraduate group yesterday regarding enrollment. Last year we were 4% down, this year 18%. Other colleges/universities across the state are having this same problem. Students said the best way to get students to come to our university is to get them to come to campus prior to enrolling.
This summer’s Bear Partnership program has approximately nine students so far. James and Denise are still working with other school districts. Stephen mentioned he is willing to assist them if needed.
Information will be sent to everyone regarding faculty/staff/administration awards/recognitions. Stephen is compiling information to send out soon. He asked everyone to think of people that could be nominated for awards.
A student was nominated by Denise for the 3-Minute Thesis event, but was informed the student did not meet the requirements.
Karen, Kim, Travis and Ximena will be attending MACTE next week and report on it at the next LC meeting.
Suzanne Hull, DESE Coordinator for Educator Preparation, met with the Dean and believes their data person will be able to collect data we can use for accreditation purposes and tracking students by adding a field to their question regarding first year teacher/employer surveys. Dean Hough will invite Dr. Hull to campus in November as a follow-up to this conversation.
The U.S. Department of Education will fund a regional center for Kansas and Missouri. The MSU COE will not apply for this funding; however, we will support the DESE proposal to create a center in partnership with Kansas. The current center is housed at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.
Homecoming is this weekend. The One-Room Schoolhouse Scholarship event is Friday, 1:45 – 2:45 p.m. The college is hosting a tent at Bearfest Village from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Food will be catered by Famous Dave’s. Everyone is welcome to attend; bring family and friends.
Emmett reported that the search committee for the Associate Dean is finalizing applicants. The committee for the Bear Power Director is meeting tomorrow to screen applications.
Around the Table
Janice Duncan
Last year’s ACT averaged 27.5. Emmett asked what the high ACT scores at GLS could be attributed to. The PTA/Athletic Boosters combined fundraiser netted $135,000.00; $25,000.00 will be used for safety projects. Of that amount, outdoor cameras will be installed for $16,000.00. Janice is working with MSU security regarding inside door locks and they are having a school-wide safety training for students on November 15th. High schools from the area have been invited to send two of their students to also attend. They are also in the process of planning a half-day safety training for elementary students.
Karen Engler
Karen watched a DESE webinar prior to coming to LC this morning. Following are some of the highlights:
Program coordinators from the secondary education programs meet three times a year to go over progress with their students. Students take their comps the first week of spring semester prior to student teacher. Then they take the MOCA. They have a 100% pass rate.
Juli Panza
Secondary English and Math education students have group meetings.
Dennis Lancaster
They met with department heads from Business, Nursing and Agriculture yesterday. Part of the discussion was on agriculture education at their campus. They also discussed secondary education classes being available online.
Shirley Lawler
The Missouri Educators of Tomorrow’s Schools meets on October 25. This group focusses on education career fields. Chancellor Lawler will send us information on the event, so COE personnel can attend.
Kim Dubree
MEES training will be held on November 6th for Springfield Public Schools cooperating teachers. In the Spring there will be 130 new cooperating teachers that will need the training.
Dean Hough
The next CIS meeting is November 1st, 11:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m., at the Hospitality Room/Meyer Alumni Center. Karen Engler and Andrew Homberg will lead the meeting on data needed for the various standards after the CAEP Team presents their data. CAEP Standard 3.4 was discussed regarding monitoring students from enrolling through graduating/employment. Juli is going to write up the process that is followed in Professional Education Services for students. This will also be discussed at the CIS meeting. The Dean asked Andrew Homburg to look at the EPP bylaws regarding having representatives from the public schools attend. Apparently they can. Stephen Kleinsmith gave the Dean names that would be willing to attend.
Meeting adjourned at 10:30 a.m.
