Middle School and Greenwood Collaboration for Differentiation
Dr. Kimberly Stormer, Asst. Professor, RFT, partnered middle school preservice teachers enrolled in the instructional strategies course with the fourth and second grades at Greenwood in order to learn how to differentiate instruction. Preservice teachers who taught in Mrs. Broaddus’s class created social science lessons based on eighth-grade Missouri Learning Standards while differentiating their instruction so that the fourth graders would be able to understand content at their grade level. Preservice teachers who taught in Mrs. Flander’s class created math lessons based on sixth-grade Missouri Learning Standards while differentiating their instruction so that students at the second grade level would be able to understand content at their grade level.
The preservice teachers reported that this was a great experience because they gained insight into understanding the complexity of differentiating instruction for middle level students who are not working on grade level. Preservice teachers reported understanding why an opportunity gap exists and continues to widen in education.

Program Support Funds Available
The Faculty Advisory Council met on November 14, 2018, and recommended making the remaining one-time Program Support funds available to individual programs. Program coordinators may submit a request for funding this year for projects promoting marketing, recruitment and retention. Requests must first be approved by FAC and then the Budget Committee. Budget Committee members were asked to consider the FAC recommendation and voted in favor of the following:
College of Education
Program Support Request
Program Development, Start-up, Redesign, Recruitment & Retention Support
(Revised 2016 criteria on 11/14/2018)
The COE Dean’s Office with approval by the Budget Committee may set aside funds for marketing, recruitment and retention in support of academic programs. Program Coordinators must submit written requests for funding between November 19, 2018, and December 14, 2018. Requests must include an itemized list of each activity with associated cost, rationale, expected outcomes, evaluation plan, and explanation of how the target market will include traditionally under-represented groups. The total may not exceed $3,500 and all funds must be spent before June 1, 2019. The department head overseeing the program must approve the submission prior to being forwarded to the Dean’s Office for consideration by the Faculty Advisory Council. Awards will be announced before the end of January 2019.
