December 6, 2018

9:00 – 10:30 a.m.

Hill 339

Notes

In attendance:

David Hough, Russ Brock, Denise Cunningham, Kim Dubree, Janice Duncan, Karen Engler, Judy Gregg, Stephen Kleinsmith, Travis Marler, Juli Panza, James Satterfield, Emmett Sawyer, Ximena Uribe-Zarain, Sharon Lopinot

Guests: Duany Goyes

Stephen opened the meeting by showing and discussing a brochure from Montclair State University.  He is overseeing the development of a new college brochure.  We have hired someone to do the graphic design, but need everyone to provide the information.  Stephen asked Sharon to forward six other brochures to look at for ideas.  The first item that needs to be developed is the table of content.  We could start with a message from the Dean.  Dean Hough recommended the message be more generic than just from the dean, per se. Juli and Denise and a few others have been working on collecting information on the history of our college.  Everyone needs to give suggestions.  Dean Hough reminded everyone that we need to keep in mind that the brochure is for students and their families.  A discussion followed including some items to put in the brochure including information from the Dean’s Community Advisement Board, alumni, ORSH scholarship recipient, and Margie VanDeven/DESE.

Dean Hough asked who would like to be a member of MACTE.  Sharon will register Karen Engler and Cathy Pearman.

Students can purchase Taskstream subscriptions at the Bookstore.  They have some three-year subscriptions available for purchasing, but after that only seven-year cards subscriptions will be sold.  They are ordering 100 seven-year subscriptions.  Travis has been in contact with them regarding the order since our college is investigating a site license proposal for Taskstream.  In an email Travis received from the bookstore he was informed if students have a choice, most choose to purchase from the bookstore and use their financial aid.  The Dean will discuss this further after LC with the department heads.

Karen discussed the disposition referral plan [Teacher Candidate Professional Dispositions Referral and Development Plan] found on the EPP website.  Secondary dispositions are often handled at the program level; however, if they get to the level of the Director of Secondary Ed & EPP Unit Head, those two administrators are also present for the creation of the Development Plan.  For that level of EPP involvement, Chris has started a procedure to document the information, starting with Fall 2017 to present.  Documentation includes the name of the student, date of the final meeting, the resolution and who attended the meeting.  Dean Hough asked if we needed something for our college.  He will address it at the EPP meeting today.

MSU cooperating teachers are paid with a supplemental pay PAF.  Kim received an email regarding a PAF that was submitted for a CT that is part-time.  This had not happened before and HR did put the paperwork through.  In the future payment will need to be made differently.  Kim will start checking with MSU faculty to see if they are full or part-time.  If part-time she will work with the Dean regarding payment.

A major topic at the Board of Governors meeting next week will be college efforts to retain students.  Dean Hough mentioned COE funds being made available for our programs to work on marketing, recruitment, and retention.  He noted our retention rates are higher than the overall university rate.  Juli reported that she and her advisors reach out to those students that haven’t met with them yet and try to help them.  They keep track of reasons why students do not attend/return, mainly due to life circumstances or finances. They also encourage students to join student organizations.  The Dean said if a student in our college is having financial problems they could be encouraged to apply for a position in COE.  They should also be encouraged to apply at Greenwood, and the Dean will support those positions, as well.

Juli talked about Bear Paws.  This program is for students who are struggling academically.  She and the other advisors work with them to try to get them where they need to be.  Next year she would like to match them up with a student mentor who is in the same program.

Judy reported on CAEP progress.  Information in section 3.1 has information on Bear Paws and tracking of our students/retention.  They are finishing up Standard 5 and now working on what evidence they have and do not have.  They will then work on advanced standards.  After January the Dean said there will be a final review of the Self-Study report. Once turned in we will be at the Formative Review stage.  The CAEP review team will send questions back to us that we will need to look at and answer prior to their visit in November.

Around the Table

David Hough
Rachel Heinz is working closely with the Dean to create a charter with by-laws to create a multi-state consortium called MIPSA. They had a fall meeting in Columbia and will have a spring meeting in Minnesota.  Regional groups will be tied to Think College.

The CBHE has shared information on the status of required courses tied to completion of a degree.  The goal is 120 hours.  We only have two programs over 120 credit hours, which are SPE and ECE.  If EDC345 could be classified as a general education class, it would help decrease the number of hours required for completion.  Our college tried to do this once and it didn’t work out.  James said SPE will eventually be at 127 credit hours.  There are some IHEs that have these two programs at 120 hours.  Emmett agreed to work with the RFT faculty to determine the viability of submitting EDC 345 as a general education course.

Travis Marler
The CAEP evidence centered on students is summarized.  No names are included in the documentation.  He would like to use minutes from some meetings to show P-12 collaboration.  Can he use it with names in them?  Dean Hough said we all need to just be general with information, such as MSU people, representatives from Nixa/Ozark, City of Springfield, etc.  The team needs lists of the department advisory councils.  The Dean’s office has the information and will send it to them.

Juli Panza
Yesterday students from Branson High School that are in an Educators Rising club, came to campus for a visit.  All of the students are interested in pursuing an education degree.  There were great discussions and questions.  When they left, their sponsor said everyone exceeded their expectations.  Ten students in GoCAPS will be coming in the spring.  She is also looking at other High School education student groups.  If you know of any specific groups, please let her know.  They are reaching out to students asking them to write up “What is your story?” including who encouraged you to pursue an education degree, any special mentors, experiences, etc.  They are working on matching current students to mentor with incoming accepted students for Fall 2019.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:45 a.m.
