“Choosing Education as a Career” Recruitment Plan
Thanks to Workforce Development funding in the amount of $83,000 via the Provost’s Office in support of the MSU COE marketing, recruitment, and retention proposal titled “Choosing Education as a Career,” a number of initiatives in our plan are well underway.
- On April 1st Ashley Flores began recruitment efforts in the Mobile, Alabama, area. She is meeting with families and networking with schools to identify and recruit minority students to apply for MSU and COE Multicultural Leadership Scholarships and to attend our Bear Partnership Summer Residential Program. Dr. Denise Cunningham, Dr. James Satterfield, and Juli Panza are leading the Bear Partnership effort. At present we have 30 high school students ready to spend a week on the MSU campus this summer to experience college life and subsequently prepare to enroll in a teacher education, child and family development, or child life program. Each Bear Partnership program participant will be given an “M” Number, so we will be able to reach out to them whenever they arrive on campus as degree-seeking students.
- A new COE marketing brochure is “hot off the press.” These are being distributed widely across the State, and copies can be accessed in the Dean’s Office as well as each COE departmental office.
- Annice McLean, Alex Jean-Charles, and Dr. K are spearheading the COE Faculty Advisory Council’s “30 Second Video” project that will be unveiled at the August 2019 College Meeting.
- Our “Bears in Buildings” initiative is beginning to gain traction with promotional materials under production and potential “Bears in Buildings”, i.e., COE alumni working in schools and agencies, are being identified. The goal is to connect more closely with our alumni, invite them to become active participants in COE activities, network via social media and the Dean’s blog, the Hough Post, wear Bear Wear on Fridays, display MSU COE materials in their buildings, distribute incentives to students and their families, and become ambassadors for promoting education as a career. We hope to be able to unroll a pilot with 30 to 50 Bears in Buildings beginning in August 2019.
Thanks to all COE program faculty who met with Dr. K early last fall to provide information that has now resulted in the above plan.

Faculty from Ningxia University and Xian International University Visit MSU-West Plains and Mountain Grove Campuses
Dr. Gilbert Brown sends the following:
“Twenty-two Chinese Faculty from Ningxia University and Xian International University gained first- hand experiences about institutional segmentation in the American higher education system through their recent March 29 campus visits to the Missouri State University-West Plains and Missouri State University’s Mountain Grove campuses. Participating faculty gained first-hand impressions combined with faculty lectures into a seminar experience about the American Higher Education system through the Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE)’s Master’s Degree Program’s Certificate Perspectives about American Higher Education. Our visiting faculty seek to combine their learning through the Certificate Program with their overall yearlong internship experience into a rich learning opportunity at MSU. Faculty leverage their sabbatical like experience through the Certificate Program and their Internship to improve their teaching/learning and research productivity when they return to Ningxia University and Xian International. SAHE Program anticipates offering the Certificate Program to 25 more faculty members during Fall 19.”
