China Initiatives
Drs. Rhonda Bishop, Michele Smith, James Satterfield and Mrs. Michelle Satterfield, have all been accepted to teach in China at Shaanxi Normal University (SNNU) for two weeks in July.
Additionally, Peng Zhang, Michele Smith, and James Satterfield have submitted a conference proposal to the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) that focuses on development of their international collaborative doctoral program. While in China James will be working to further our relationship with SNNU by discussing and further developing the collaborative doctoral program. James has also asked each program area in CLSE to redesign some initiatives that were previously considered. He will also be working specifically in the next few weeks with Emmett Sawyer and Denise Cunningham about potential collaborations that he can possibly discuss while he is there. James thinks there is potential for the MAT, Special Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Educational Administration, and Counseling.
Middle School Program Hosts MAP Conference
The Middle School Program hosted its annual MAP Conference on April 17, 2019. The conference hosted 415 eighth grade students from Aurora Jr. High, Westport Middle School, and Jarrett Middle Schools. The interesting aspect of the conference this year is a former middle school alumnae who is in her third year of teaching brought her students to the conference. Jennifer Walker, class of 2017, was instrumental in incorporating the rural demographic into the conference as Aurora had 153 students attend. Drs. Pamela Correll, Tuesda Roberts, and Kimberly Stormer used the conference as an opportunity to capture data for a study on the self-efficacy of First Generation College Students at the middle level and possible interventions that may increase these students propensity for attending college. This research is in direct correlation with the promotion and tenure seminars that advocated for the inclusion of community projects into faculty’s research agenda.

COE Supporting Faculty to Attend the 2nd Teaching K-12 Black History Conference in July
Hello Education Faculty,
My name is LaGarrett King, Associate Professor of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum at the University of Missouri. I am also the Founding Director of the CARTER Center for K-12 Black History Education. I would like to personally invite you, your staff, and students to our 2nd Teaching K-12 Black History Conference in July. We have over 50 teacher workshops and speakers from all over the country. Conference registration is $50.00 before June 1st. The conference hotel rate is $84.00 per night. We expect 300 like-minded people who desire to be better educators who seek cultural responsive pedagogies. As we inch closer to the 400 year anniversary of the first Africans to arrive in the Virginia area in 1619, our topic, Teaching Slavery and its Afterlife is extremely important as schools will commensurate this event. Please read below to click on our link and we hope to see you in Columbia, MO.
Per Dean Hough: The COE will cover costs of registration, travel, and lodging. Interested faculty should contact their department heads before May 10, 2019, so the Dean’s Office can make arrangements with the Carter Center.
On behalf of the CARTER Center for K-12 Black History Education at the University of Missouri’s College of Education, I would like to extend to you a personal invitation to attend our 2nd Annual Teaching Black History Conference in Columbia, Missouri on July 26-27, 2019. This year’s conference will be held at Muriel W. Battle High School which is located at 7575 E. St. Charles Road, Columbia, MO 65202 and will run from 8 am to 5 pm each day.
This year’s conference theme is “400 Years and Counting: Teaching Slavery and Its Afterlife” which seeks to engage and prepare teachers, at all levels, to teach about this important subject and its impact in their classrooms. We have 50 workshop sessions from educational researchers, teacher educators, classroom teachers, non-profit educators, and community educators from all over the United States. In addition, Dr. Hasan Jefferies from Ohio State University and Dr. Ebony Thomas from the University of Pennsylvania will serve as our featured presenters. We also have the African Diaspora Consortium presenting on the new African Diaspora Advance Placement Course as well as workshops from Teaching Tolerance, Zinn Education Group, and Teaching for Change.
The Teaching Black History Conference is a teacher centered/friendly conference. This means that workshops are not too theoretical and teachers will leave the workshops with tangible strategies to incorporate in their classrooms that will (1) focus on content and pedagogy, (2) incorporate active learning, (3) support collaboration, (4) model instructional approaches, (5) provide teachers with materials/notes, and (6) leave space for reflection. Last year’s highlight video is located here. Also, a list of this year’s conference workshops can be found here.
In particular, I would like to ask you to encourage your teachers to attend and publicize it across your school district and college. Last year, we had several school districts and universities paid the registration fees and travel to come. We encourage that as well. The cost to attend is $50 before June 1st and $60 after June1st. Conference attendees should register on our event bright page. The conference hotel is Holiday Inn East and rooms for the conference are $84.00 per night. Call (573) 474-4444 and state that you are with the Teaching Black History Conference for the rate. For those who are coming out of town and are not driving, Columbia, Missouri does have a small airport and many people fly into St. Louis and Kansas City. If you select St. Louis or Kansas City, there is a shuttle that runs several times to Columbia, Missouri. The cost is $ 50.00 each way. Please check rates at Columbia’s airport as sometimes the flights are similar in prices when all costs are totaled. Columbia’s airport only has two airlines, American and United.
