Dean Hough welcomed everyone to the meeting. Discussion ensued regarding communication from COE personnel who attend DESE, et al. meetings on behalf of our college. Most people do a good job of reporting back to the College. However not all information is provided to the Dean’s Office for dissemination in the Hough Post. A suggestion was made to ask representatives to provide an agenda prior to the meeting if possible. There was a major issue at the last MoTAC meeting. New literacy requirements which will go into effect in August were shared in a PowerPoint. DESE formed a Literacy Task Force that met on March 21, 2018. The information had been discussed multiple times with the MACTE Board and with MACCE and MABEP. Somehow over the past two years the communication did not go to the right people or it was overlooked. Some noted that this issue has arisen since Dean Hough stepped away from the MABEP Board and has been supporting a variety of representatives to MACTE and DESE-sponsored meetings. It was suggested to write up a short explanation of what is expected of those attending these meetings. It should include providing an agenda in advance and reporting at the next LC meeting. A brief write-up could also be provided and put in the next Hough Post. Dean Hough always acts on information brought back and disseminates it to the person/people that need to know including the Director of Secondary Education and the Head of the EPPU. Everyone thought these were good ideas. The Dean asked if anyone wanted to be willing to write something up and relay this information/follow up with those who attend meetings on behalf of the college. After the meeting Russ said he would draft something for review by the LC and the Dean’s Faculty Advisory Council to consider.
Judy and Emmett are taking on the responsibility of being our experts on all data used at the program level for our Annual Performance Reports. They will report to faculty at the Continuous Improvement Seminars. Everyone agreed to this. Travis and Ximena are presenting at the next CIS meeting on SharePoint.
Travis and Ximena are reporting to EPPC regarding the ACT cut score/MoGEA issue. Juli said only nine of the incoming freshmen had less than a 19 cut score. It is a little higher for transfer students. EPPC will decide on the ACT cut score.
Dean asked the LC to send him student highlights that could be shared with the Provost’s Office for consideration of presentation to the Board of Governors and for MSU Communications. He shared information about a scholarship to be awarded to one of the CEFS students. A discussion followed on how to obtain this information. Juli gets it through various meetings with students as goes for the other advisors.
Dean Hough paid for a table of eight at the Nixa Education Foundation Gala. There are some seats still open. Let Sharon know if interested in attending. The event is May 3, 5:30 p.m., Doubletree Hotel & Convention Center.
The MarooNation Ball is on May 31, 2019, at The Old Glass Place. Our college will have one table of eight. So far Minor and Sarah Jean Baker are attending. James Satterfield is working on finding others and will let Sharon know as he gets names.
Dean Hough reminded everyone that offices are to be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Administrators can make accommodations regarding work hours for their staff. Phones can be transferred to the Dean’s Office if needed. Administrators should let the Dean know when they are taking days off. We should be able to call offices and know where people are. The Dean also reminded administrators that leave reports need to be completed monthly.
Around the Table
David Hough
President Smart met with the ALC yesterday afternoon and shared information from the Missouri Legislature. In sum, our elected officials were instrumental in recommending a $10 million dollar funding increase for our University. The budget cuts each cost center was required to make will remain in effect.
Emmett shared two videos posted on the MSU home page today. A few minutes were taken to look at both of them.
Ximena Uribe-Zarain
Ximena and Karen Engler were in Jefferson City Monday and Tuesday this week for a meeting with the MEES Validation workgroup. They are revising the wording on the rubric, and soon they will start analyzing data to set the permanent cut score. As of now, the MEES passing score is 24 (cooperating teacher plus university supervisor). That score is very low and was set in good faith not to affect candidates. For the 2019-20 year, the passing score will be 30 (again, combined). The workgroup will announce the permanent passing score (based on data from all institutions) after the new APR data is collected this fall.
Stephen Kleinsmith
Tomorrow is the Recruiting & Retaining Quality Teachers Presentation with Beth Davey, 2018 MO Teacher of the Year. Students from our university and the area schools have been invited to attend. The thirty second videos are going well. They are almost finished and should start editing next week. Stephen will have more information on Bear in Every Building soon.
Juli Panza
They are going to have a meeting to restructure the MAT.
Russ Brock
Last month he was visiting interns he supervises and saw a lot of bear wear. Last week they had a workshop titled ESSA Targeted Buildings. This was for schools that received low ratings. They worked on developing plans to address subgroup performance. Over 100 people attended. They have two jobs posted for professional development and will be posting another one.
Kim Dubree
They are finishing up on placing twenty-three students for fall 2019. Most students have taken the MOCA. They are sending reminders for those that haven’t.
Emmett Sawyer
Jamie Atkinson co-authored a book which is being nominated for the Outstanding Book Award 2020 with the Society of Professors of Education.
Stephanie Huffman
She is receiving the Herb Lawrence Leadership and Service Award from the Arkansas Association of Instructional Media this weekend. Stephanie will also be promoting our university and college.
Denise Cunningham
They have worked out the dual credit for ELE 302 with Nixa Public Schools which will start in the Fall. The school will take care of scheduling practicums for their students. Denise has been asked to complete a review for AAT for Ozark Community College.
James Satterfield.
They have 38 students signed up for Bear Partnership Program. He gave a big thank you to Stephen Kleinsmith and our graduate assistant, Enuma Orakwue, for assisting in recruiting students.
