MACTE news story and PD workshop: Teaching the Reconstruction Era
Dear MACTE members,
We wanted to share this news article about how urban superintendents want more ways to get teachers in classrooms.
I was also asked to pass on information regarding an upcoming workshop facilitated by Facing History and Ourselves.
On July 30th and 31st, we will host a professional development for teachers, pre-service teachers, and other educators who will benefit from this topic: Teaching the Reconstruction Era. The goal is to reach educators who are currently or soon will be impacting the next generation of citizens. Middle school through high school teachers and pre-service teachers are invited to register for this free, two day workshop to be held here in Diamond, MO.
Please distribute this information to the teachers and teacher education programs you reach. You are likely familiar with the Facing History organization and their work. We hope to reach teachers and teacher education programs across the state with the opportunity to attend this workshop at the birthplace of George Washington Carver, who was born into slavery during the Civil War and grew up on this site during the Reconstruction Era. We plan to include a short field trip to the historic 1872 Neosho Colored School, just eight miles away. This building served as a school for African Americans and was attended by Carver.

One of our COE alumna, Rebecca (McLean) Sears ’04 will receive a Bear of Excellence Award at the alumni association’s Bears of Distinction dinner on June 22. Rebecca is Assistant Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction, in the Neosho School District. She has overseen the expansion of career exploration and project-based learning programs. She has implemented a standards-based grading system, 1:1 technology for K-12, and a comprehensive literacy model with positive results to student achievement. She has also overseen crisis management after a tornado destroyed Goodman Elementary School, getting the elementary school relocated and students back in the classroom within three days. She managed the death of a teacher after a tragic car accident during parent pick-up. Ashley Flores recruiting students for COE
Ashley Flores, COE part-time recruiter, pictured above with prospective students at a Career Day in Mobile, Alabama. Ashley has identified a number of schools with high achieving, college-ready students, many from traditionally under-represented groups. She has been attending career fairs at these schools and has identified a number of students interested in pursuing a career in education. This effort is funded by a COE workforce development grant from the Provost’s Office in the amount of $83,060. The goal is to have students attend our Bear Partnership summer residential program co-directed by Dr. Denise Cunningham and Dr. James Satterfield. Ashley sends the dean periodic reports of progress, so the recruitment activities can be monitored and assessed on a monthly basis.

New admission to Teacher Education Policy could save students money
On June 5, 2019, the EPPC Executive Committee approved a change to the Missouri State University policy for admission to teacher education.
In sum, students who score 20 or higher on the ACT will now be exempt from the MoGEA requirement. The EPPC may appoint a committee to study the feasibility of developing some type of “sliding scale” that would include GPA and ACT.
