Students from Teen Leadership Program Tour Campus
Five students from Wyman’s St. Louis-based Teen Leadership Program (TLP) visited with Dean Hough on July 26, 2019. The TLP provides immersive summer experiences and school-year support to help more than 80 teens each year become successful college-bound students and citizens of the world.
The program begins the summer before ninth grade and supports healthy teen development, leadership capacity, college access and college persistence through the following:
- Participation in outdoor challenges and more than 40 hours of community service annually to help teens build confidence and leadership
- Identification of values, talents and interests
- Exploration of aligned career paths
- Relationship building with adult role models
- Coaching to help secure financial aid
- Guided college tours
- On-campus mentoring and resources once college has begun
Bears in Every Building Kick-off Event Held on August 1, 2019
Dean Hough and the BIEB committee met with 30+ teachers who have volunteered to be “Bears in Their Buildings”. This project is funded by the Provost’s Office as part of the University’s workforce development grants program. Commissioner Margie Vandeven, our “Bear” in the Jefferson Building, attended along with 8 COE faculty and staff.

First group of Bears in Every Building
Update from Ashley Flores, COE Recruiter
COE recruiter, Ashley Flores, was able to set up scholarship visits with several summer camps. She met with prospective students on a consistent basis, and recorded contact information for 120+ interested students. Ashley met with two schools last week and is solidifying campus visits for the next 9 weeks.
Diversity Scholar – Call for Applicants
Faculty who are interested in learning about diversity and creating an inclusive classroom culture are encouraged to apply for a $100 Diversity Scholar stipend. A limited number of stipends will be available. Past participants in this program earned a Diversity Scholars certificate serving as a mentor on diversity and inclusion to other faculty members in their department.
Interested applicants should submit a one-page application to the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning by the end of the day, August 17th, 2019. This should be a one-page letter outlining your primary goals for integrating multicultural and diverse perspectives in your teaching.
Successful applicants are expected to participate in the four Diversity Workshops facilitated by the Diversity Fellow, Dr. Blanca Judith Martínez. They will also be asked to write a reflective essay on how they incorporated this new knowledge into their practice, sharing practical teaching tips with other faculty for creating an inclusive learning environment.

Global Bus Foundation’s National Dialogue on Youth Empowerment and Peace Building in Morocco
Dr. McCafferty-Wright, Assistant Professor, CEFS, took a break from her research in Morocco to facilitate a discussion at the Global Bus Foundation’s National Dialogue on Youth Empowerment and Peace Building. There, she learned with and from leaders in Moroccan education and youth civic engagement. She also helped present an award to Shems Zoundri, a student who won a contest with her speech on sexual harassment. The Global Bus Foundation is a Moroccan NGO that works to foster mutual respect through interfaith dialogue and cross cultural communication.

Spirit Bear Coming to Hill Hall This Fall
Michael Mardis, Project Manager-Architect, Design & Construction, worked with the Dean and a committee to design a bear statue which will be placed at the north entrance of Hill Hall prior to homecoming. The statue is part of a project to promote campus spirit, unity and pride. It is an effort from the Student Government Association and Senior Class Gift Commission who organized the project to bring 25 sponsored bears around campus, each to be painted to reflect the unit or organization sponsoring a bear. The following design is now in production.
Invitation to VIP Reception and Gracias Concert
Esther Kim, director of Public Relations for International Youth Fellowship (IYF) in Springfield, Missouri invites COE faculty and staff to the Ninth Annual IYF World Camp during August 5th – 14th for the first time in Springfield, Missouri. A VIP Reception will be held on August 14th at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Gracias Music Concert at 7:30 p.m., which will be performed by the world renowned and award-winning Gracias Choir. Please contact the Dean’s Office if you would like a VIP pass.
Opportunities in China
Through the Missouri State Office of International Leadership and Training Center, Dr. Rhonda Bishop, Michelle Satterfield, and Dr. James Satterfield represented the College of Education at the Shaanxi Normal University International Summer School. This academic and cultural exchange provides an opportunity to develop a deep understanding of both educational similarities and differences between our two countries. Be on the lookout for information about the application process in the Spring of 2020.
Mark Your Calendars for MSU/COE Homecoming Events
MSU Homecoming is Friday and Saturday, October 25 – 26. The Dean’s Office is in the process of planning two events. More information will be provided soon.

One Room School House Event (located west of Greenwood Laboratory School)
The One Room Schoolhouse Scholarship will be presented to the recipient.
The Golden Bears will be guests; refreshments will be served. All faculty/staff invited.
Saturday, October 26:
Time: after the parade, approximately 10:00 a.m.
Drop by the COE Tent at BearFest Village prior to the football game to welcome back alumni, friends of the college, and former students. Lunch will be served. All faculty/staff invited.
