“Bear in Every Building” Kicks-Off 2019-2020 Academic Year
Faculty working on the Bear in Every Building project met on Friday, August 16th after the College of Education Faculty & Staff Meeting. Rhonda Bishop has agreed to chair the work group and will provide leadership to ensure the program gets off to a fast start this fall. The goal this year is to have one of our MSU / COE alumni in each of Missouri’s 500+ school districts partner with us to recruit students into an education-related field, i.e., child and family development, child life, teaching, counseling, or leadership.
Building Bears should have their posters prominently displayed in classrooms and incentives ready to share with students in preparation for Bear Wear Friday. Send us your photos, gang!
2019 College Meeting
President Clif Smart and Provost Frank Einhellig spoke with the COE faculty and staff at our 19th Annual College Meeting on Friday, August 16, 2019. Recruitment and retention were a major focus of conversations that continued throughout the meeting. Dean Hough’s State of the College Address focused on our College’s opportunity to lead Governor Parson’s workforce development agenda in terms of promoting education as a career. The Dean’s Office has aggregated comments from the round table group discussions. If you would like to read these, please feel free to drop by the office and ask Rose or Sharon for a copy. In sum, most comments focused on the Bear in Every Building initiative and the Internship Academy approach to preparing future teachers.
We now have two to four faculty from each COE department who have volunteered to serve on a SEM Council. These faculty will attend a recruitment seminar on September 18, 2019. Stay tuned for further updates on our marketing, recruitment, and retention efforts.

Catching Up with a Missouri Sports Pioneer – Branson Tri Lakes News
By Natalee Long, Jul 23, 2019
Dora Quinn Arney Meikle has spent her life working hard for others. She has played an instrumental part in creating the women’s sports programs in Missouri, specifically at College of the Ozarks. Dora attended Greenwood Laboratory School and graduated at age 17 before attending Missouri State University, Southwest Missouri State College at the time. In college she majored in health and physical education and art. Throughout the next years, Meikle and her husband moved around a lot, continuing to teach and coach at various colleges and K-12 schools.
She joined the faculty at School of the Ozarks, now known as College of the Ozarks as a physical education professor and coach at the school in 1965. She also worked as aquatic director. Shortly after being hired she also began working to form women’s sports programs and helped the school develop its aquatic curriculum. As time went on and the success of the women’s swim program grew, Meikle was able to start the women’s cross country and track programs as well. The beginning of these programs helped C of O hold the second track meet in Missouri.
