Bears in Every Building (BIEBs) Off to Quick Start
Jennifer Baxter, Willard High School FACS teacher, is pictured below displaying materials in her classroom where she is actively promoting our recruitment initiative titled “Choosing Education as a Career.” Also pictured below is Bryce Wilson, 4th grade teacher at Willard East Elementary. Our 9,000+ alumni working throughout Missouri schools are our best ambassadors to help recruit the next generation of child and family development experts, child life specialists, teachers, counselors, and administrators. Our goal is to grow our BIEBs from 50 to 500 before the end of this academic year. Go BIEBS!

Fall 2019 Dr. Michael N. Compton Public Affairs Essay Contest
This contest is coordinated and primarily funded by Sigma Pi alumni’s non-profit organization, IDEAL (Institute for the Development of Ethics and Leadership). It is promoted by the undergraduate members of Sigma Pi (who are not eligible to compete) and administered by MSU’s Office of Public Affairs Support.
The goal for the contest is to support the public affairs mission at MSU and boost student interest in the yearly theme. Complete details about the Contest are available at this link. This contest is open to all full-time enrolled sophomores, juniors and seniors on the Springfield campus. Faculty are encouraged to members of Sigma Pi to briefly announce the contest in their classes sometime between Sep 9 and 11. New Way to Access Qualtrics
MSU migrated the Qualtrics survey system into our website (to a single sign-on). This means that now everybody has an account ready to be set (self-enroll) in the system as long as they have a BearPass. This also means Dr. Uribe-Zarain will no longer have the ability or the need to create individual accounts.
Existing Qualtrics users will now be able to use their Missouri State credentials to log into Qualtrics. They can use their BearPass Login ID (abc123) and the same password used to log onto their computer or email. Go to https://missouristate.qualtrics.com/
New Qualtrics users can follow the following instructions to create their accounts:
- Go to https://missouristate.qualtrics.com/ . It will forward to a page similar to this
- Add your BearPass Login ID (abc123) and the same password you use to log onto your email.
- Here is a website with information to get you started: https://www.qualtrics.com/support/survey-platform/survey-module/survey-module-overview/
Please contact Dr. Uribe-Zarain you need help setting up your surveys.
GEP 101 Class Learns About the One-Room Schoolhouse
Dean Hough shared background information on the origin of the one-room schoolhouse with Dr. Cathy Pearman’s GEP 101 class. As well as the development of the one-room schoolhouse project, Dean Hough discussed what school was like for teachers and students who attended these schools in the 19th and 20th centuries. Students learned about the rich history of teacher education at MSU from its beginning in 1905 at the State’s Normal School.

After receiving more than 240 nominations from citizens, school districts and charter schools throughout the state of Missouri, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) announced seven finalists for the 2020 Missouri Teacher of the Year award. This year’s finalists represent five different regions throughout the state and highlight the broad range of course options that are helping prepare Missouri students for success beyond graduation.
The seven finalists include:
- Dan Brinkmann, Washington– automotive technology, Four Rivers Career Center
- Melissa Grandel, Fordland R-III– English language arts, Fordland High School
- Zachary Hamby, Ava R-I– English language arts, Ava High School
- Denise Henggeler, Northeast Nodaway Co. R-V– fourth grade, Northeast Nodaway Elementary
- Kevin Lay, Gasconade Co. R-II– physics/physical science/STEM, Owensville High School
- Rachael Wilcox, Francis Howell R-III– first grade, Independence Elementary
- Sandra Wood, Maryville R-II– Spanish, Maryville High School
“I want to commend every teacher in Missouri for their hard work as we start the school year,” Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Margie Vandeven said. “These seven finalists provide a snapshot of the lasting impact great teachers have on our students from the first to the last day they step into a Missouri public school. We couldn’t be more excited for this announcement.”
A committee comprised of teachers, business leaders and education organization leaders will choose the Missouri Teacher of the Year following interviews with each finalist on Monday, September 9. The winner, finalists, semifinalists and Regional Teachers of the Year will be honored at a banquet in Jefferson City on Monday, October 21. The new Missouri Teacher of the Year will serve as the state’s nominee for the 2020 National Teacher of the Year.
The Missouri Teacher of the Year program recognizes the efforts of effective teachers in providing a quality education to their students. Shelly Parks, an English language arts teacher from Francis Howell North High School (Francis Howell R-III), is the current Missouri Teacher of the Year. DESE conducts the Missouri Teacher of the Year program with financial support provided by the Boeing Company and Bayer AG.

ATLL Director’s Position Moving to Full-Time
The ATLL has received funding and approval from DESE to move the director’s position to full-time role. Dr. Russ Brock has been serving as a clinical instructor in CLSE .50 FTE and as ATLL director .50 FTE since March 2016. Because the level of activity of the ATLL has increased, and a number of new positions will be added in the coming months, it is now appropriate to return to a full-time director’s position. If you would like to volunteer to serve on the ATLL Director Search Committee, please let Dean Hough know before September 6, 2019. Dr. James Satterfield will chair the search. All interested individuals are encouraged to consider applying for this position. Dr. Brock has announced his intent to apply for the full-time position, as well.
