In attendance: David Hough, Russ Brock, Denise Cunningham, Kim Dubree, Janice Duncan, Karen Engler, Judy Gregg, Stephanie Huffman, Travis Marler, Juli Panza, James Satterfield, Emmett Sawyer, Barri Tinkler, Ximena Uribe-Zarain, Sharon Lopinot
Guests: Rhonda Bishop, Robin Koerber, Sara Tipton
Dean Hough invited Rhonda Bishop, Sara Tipton, and Robin Koerber to discuss the Internship Academy (IA) and Bears in Every Building (BIEB). BIEBs cannot be called “ambassadors” due to the university having University Staff Ambassadors and Student Ambassadors. “Ambassador” is being removed from all of our BIEB recruitment materials. He is working on a revised flyer and poster, which were passed around for everyone to look at. Flyers will be taken to meetings where there could be possible “Bears”. All new “Bears” are given a few items such as a polo shirt, framed poster, pennant, etc. A suggestion was made to add “PK-12” (teachers) to the flyer. We will be working with Sara and Robin to make sure all IA students who graduated and hired become BIEBs. Rhonda is working on finding places to promote BIEBs. They have a booth at the MSTA Conference. Travis shared a base list with COE graduates who are teaching with Rhonda. The list includes where they are teaching and school contact information. Rhonda is working on an email to go out next week. The Dean asked everyone to inform Rhonda of any places where a number of alums will be so she can possibly plan a reception. Rhonda said faculty in secondary programs are welcome to attend the MSTA Conference to discuss them. The Dean would like to see a coordinated effort through the EPPC. Robin and Sara are starting their 5th year with the Internship Academy. There are approximately 100 graduates from the program so far and they know where approximately 85% are teaching. The program has 36 students this year. The Dean discussed possibly inviting the students who are graduating from the Internship Academy this year and have teaching jobs to the COE Graduation Reception in May to “induct” them as BIEBs. Sara will reach out to them to see if they would be interested. They would like to also have IA students in the West Plains area, but would need at least 5-6 students interested.
Barri is working on a schedule for the CAEP site visit and looking at who to invite to the sessions. She is working on round table discussions for Sunday, November 3rd with the CAEP team as follows:
- Current/past students – Internship Academy
- Principals, members of School and Community Advisory Council
- Students and employers
On Monday there would be a separate interview session regarding the Internship Academy. She will invite Vicki Schmitt. Dean Hough asked Robin, Sara, and Denise to work with Barri regarding who to invite. There will also be interviews with groups of faculty, students and staff. She will provide talking points for each group.
Faculty and staff should have received an invite to attend a Comprehensive Campaign Training Workshop on November 12th, sponsored by the MSU Foundation Office. He asked department heads to communicate this to their faculty and staff.
The MACTE schedule was handed out. Cathy Pearman, Barri Tinkler, Kim Dubree, and Karen Engler are registered to attend. The Dean will pay for LC members to attend if interested attending all or part of the conference. Work with Sharon on this. Karen said they are trying to put together a meeting on MEES.
Juli discussed FastTrack, a program where:
- Individuals 25 years or older or individuals who have not been enrolled in any school within the last two years can participate
- Grant available for students who have not earned a bachelor’s degree and planning to enroll part or full time.
- Funding is provided for four semesters
More information is in the flyers passed around. Qualifying programs are listed on the flyer. Currently Special Education is not listed. This is geared at students who have attended community colleges and could also help students who don’t return to college due to finances.
The West Plains meeting on September 12th went well. Cindy Tyree, VP of the WP School Board had some concerns, but all were addressed. The meeting was very positive. Denise and Barri provided data on our students and the same for West Plains students. As a follow-up, Stephanie is working on diversity training (elementary diversity deficiencies and multi-cultural lesson plans). Barri can work with that after our CAEP visit. Dean Hough asked Karen to meet with Stephanie and Barri to discuss who should conduct the trainings.
Department Heads were emailed a list of all of the events/meetings the dean has through December. He will discuss it with them at their next DH meeting. He may need some of them to attend some of the meetings/events for him. On October 26th, MSU is having an Epic Surprise Event at 5:30 p.m., following the homecoming football game. Information is in The Hough Post. The event starts the promotion of the University’s latest capital campaign. Everyone is invited.
Around the Table
James Satterfield
He is working on a search for the ATLL director and a faculty position for counseling. He attended the SWMASA meeting last week which was very good.
Denise Cunningham
The MOETS Conference is in West Plains on October 21st. Diana Piccolo is working on it. Denise plans on going to St. Louis to recruit for students for Bear Partnership. One of the students from the first Bear Partnership is now attending our university. The student would like to go with Denise to discuss how things are going. The CEFS department is planning an event for new students on campus this fall. The cost will be under $200.00. There are approximately 150 students, but they do not know how many will attend.
Emmett Sawyer
He and Judy are working with Barri on the Dean’s Student Advisory Council and the Schools & Community Advisory Council. The meetings are scheduled for October 2nd and 3rd.
Karen Engler
During MACTE at least one session will be held to provide MoSPE revision updates and to gather feedback. Following MACTE, the MoSPE Workgroup along with the MEES/APR Workgroup will meet to finalize the MoSPE revisions. If there are any changes programs want to the MoSPE, please let her know.
Janice Duncan
The new building project is progressing and should be completed by August 2020. The signage will include Bobby and Betty Allison. Enrollment has increased some. They are up 47 students from some time ago. This is great due to their limited amount of space, especially in elementary. In grades 6 – 12, classes are split when numbers go over 30. Currently the numbers in grades K-5 are as follows:
They are working on a possible restructure for grades 3, 4 and 5. Homecoming is Friday and Saturday, October 4, 5. Friday night is their soccer game. On Friday night, the Athletic Boosters have free games and activities for children from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. There will also be food trucks. The have elementary practicum students in the building and everything is going well.
Russ Brock
They have added a number of consultants this year. DESE is putting money behind districts that need to improve their scores. Toni Bass has been hired to work with nine school districts.
Barri Tinkler
The CIS meeting is tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. Please encourage program coordinators to attend.
Judy Gregg
She attended the EPPC meeting in April because they had not received much formative feedback from secondary programs. She contacted faculty individually and was able to get everything she needed. Judy met with EPPC again yesterday and discussed the CAEP visit. Everyone was more supportive.
Travis Marler
He is working with Megan Schiller on the DESE APR. They are trying to complete it next week so that it can be sent to program coordinators, and they can look over the list of completers before it is submitted to DESE in October.
Juli Panza
The Majors Fair is next week – she will send out a reminder. Matt and Denise are going to an IDS 120 class to discuss education careers.
Dean Hough
The Internship Academy evolved from a year and a half of planning. It was actually brought up for discussion by David Brown years ago. We need an assessment plan for the IA and Bear Partnership. There also needs to be a written plan for both explaining what will be done following participation. On all of these we should have information on how they were recruited and if they were influenced by Bear Partnership or BIEB. This will be hard to track. Barri brought up that for CAEP we need to be able to answer “How are you using data for continuous improvement?” Some of this has happened at the department levels. We need to make sure faculty understand Bear Partnership and BIEBs. We need an umbrella assessment regarding students being assigned an “M” number when they attend Bear Partnership and can be tracked by that. This will be discussed at the CIS meeting tomorrow. Regarding retention, Denise said that EC and ELE have started a mentoring program, Bear Mentors. They have events to get students together to get connected to faculty. This will hopefully help with retention. Barri said CAEP is looking for retention completion for higher degrees. Karen said secondary has a cohort program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing/ Blind-Low Vision programs. They try to have events once a month and lunch at the PSU. To stay connected to secondary level students, they have GIPA. Students meet three times a year with Karen and others to discuss how they are doing and if they have any concerns. Assistance is provided if needed. This has been going on for the last 6+ years. Typically they retain their students. Karen has a retention rate chart on this.

Digital Measures Activity Insights allows one person to create an entry (publications, research projects, grant work, etc.) and add collaborators. This way, the entry is cross populated to the profiles of all MSU people involved. However, this set up allows only the originator of the entry to make modifications. The problem is that if the originator of the entry leaves MSU, the rest of the collaborators cannot modify the entries. To fix this, the administrator of Digital Measures for the college can make modifications on request and with the provost’s approval.
In RFT, faculty are asked to keep track of the number of citations from their publications (impact factor) as part of their annual review. This becomes an issue because only the originator of the entry can update the number of citations. The administrator of Digital Measures for the college does not do these citation updates. Co-authors in the department could be negatively impacted once the originator leaves MSU. Ximena asked the RFT department head to reconsider the use of Digital Measures annual reports as a mean of measuring the impact factor of their faculty.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:40 a.m.
Department Heads were asked to stay.
