CAEP Update
Factual corrections to the CAEP Site Visit Report were submitted on Monday, December 9, 2019. We received the final Site Team Report with these corrections on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. It is important to note that CAEP and its Review Team made all the corrections that were noted by MSU. We are now working on the Rejoinder that, according to CAEP Guidelines, is due 30 calendar days after the factual corrections are returned to us, i.e., January 9, 2020. Because the University is closed during much of this time over the Holidays, CAEP has extended the due date by two weeks. Even so, past experience with CAEP Guidelines and due dates is prompting the writing team to have a draft available for faculty review prior to the official January 9th deadline. Once the MSU accreditation team has a working draft ready for review, we will let faculty and staff know, so interested individuals can contribute to this work by reading the report and offering suggestions. We will continue our practice of making “hard copies” available in Dr. Tinkler’s office for review and feedback prior to submission. Again, we will let you know as soon as we have a draft ready.
The CAEP Accreditation Council will meet on April 24 – 27, 2020, to review the Self-Study, the Site Team Report, and our Rejoinder before making a final accreditation decision. The COE Dean’s Office will announce that decision as soon as we have it in hand.
Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MoCTM) Conference
The Annual Conference of Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MoCTM) was held in Columbia, MO December 6-7th. Nineteen Elementary Education Teacher Candidates attended the conference.
They are: Angela Beisner, Shelby Blumenthal, Nykki Brigance, Kori Bujarski, Logan Courtois, Ashytyn Crockett, Jayci Davidson, Stephen Forrester, Courtney Harris, Lashanta Jones, Eden Krewson, Eryn Livingston, Anna Marie McGlone, Sarah Jo Morgan, Josie Otten, Haley Sanderson, Cheyanne Suits, Riley Talbot, and Mackenzie Tate.
Cheyanne Suits summed up the conference experience:
“Overall, I enjoyed the experience of the MCTM conference, and I wish more experiences were available to us throughout our education time at Missouri State University. This experience was one that helped me grow in confidence in teaching math in my future classroom. I got to hear more great ideas on how to contextualize math for my future students. I thought how I will problem solve as a future teaching professional, as well as my future students. I am excited to think about how I am going to support my future classroom students in their mathematical journey. I want to remember for myself and for my future students that we are all math people.”
Dr. Stefanie Livers, Assistant Professor-CEFS, made two presentations 1.) Warning! Animals wreck your instruction, and 2.) Diverse children’s literature mathematics activities roundtable presentation for pre-service teachers. Two of the Elementary Program alumni won awards. Katie Baker (pictured below) received the Outstanding Mathematics Coach. She received her B.S., MSED, including the EMS certificate from our program. Dr. Diana Piccolo was her instructor and advisor throughout her undergraduate and graduate program of study. MSED student, Mary Blocker (pictured below) was awarded the Outstanding Elementary Mathematics Teacher of the Year. Dr. Diana Piccolo is her advisor.
AERA Reception
The American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting will be held in San Francisco on April 17-21, 2020. Ten faculty from the Missouri State University College of Education will be presenting. COE is hosting a reception at the meeting for faculty, students, alumni and friends. We have requested the reception be scheduled on Saturday or Sunday evening from 7:00-8:30 and should know the specific date, time, and location by the end of January 2020. We trust this information will assist faculty presenters who are making travel arrangements.
All faculty who are presenting papers to AERA are invited to attend our COE Reception. Dean Hough and Associate Dean Tinkler will work with faculty presenters to extend invitations to colleagues across the country who might like to network and collaborate with MSU faculty on projects of mutual interest.
3rd Annual Teaching Black History Conference
Last year COE supported a team of faculty who attended the 2nd Annual Teaching Black History Conference that was held in Columbia, Missouri. Because the conference was viewed so favorably by that team, COE will again support the group to attend the July 24 – 25, 2020 conference. The team of MSU COE faculty participants would like to invite interested students to attend, as well. If you and/or your students would like more information about this opportunity, please speak with Dean Hough. He will be working directly with our faculty and students on this initiative over the coming months.
Bears in Buildings Continue to Increase
Rhonda Bishop sends the following request:
Attached is a list of our Bears in Every Building across the state who need to have their Bear Swag delivered to them. If you are going to any of these locations, would you please consider delivering some of the packages? The list is sorted by school district. This could save our committee a lot of time and the packets can get into the hands of our Bears quicker! Here is how it works:
- Review the list below. If you see any Bears in Buildings you can deliver to, please write your name in the last column titled: Person Delivering and the DATE you are going.
- I will check the database a couple of times a week; Mondays and Fridays. If I see your name on the list I will a. Contact the Dean’s office to retrieve the package and b. Will contact the Bear you are delivering for so they know you are coming.
- If you have a quick turnaround that will miss my check-in days, please email me! I will get the packages out quicker.
- Deliver and take pictures and send them to me. Use Boomer in the picture, too (each Bear gets one).
BIEB Delivery Sheet updated 12.6.19.xlsx
The sheet is a living document so please be careful if you are trying to cut and paste. I hope since this one is in Excel online we will be able to keep it current. If you signed up before and do not see your name, please put your information in again please.
Thank you again for helping us with this project!
A delivery was made to BIEB at Central High School in the Springfield Public School District last week. Below are some of the recipients:
COE Commencement, Finals, Grades & Happy Holidays
I hope faculty will be able to attend Friday’s COE Commencement at JQH. As always, the breakfast smorgasbord will be ready at 9:00 AM and we will begin lining up to march into the arena at 9:30 AM. Due to the early Commencement time, we are unable to host a reception for our graduates and their families; therefore, participating in Commencement exercises will be our best way this semester to show support for students. Hope to see everyone there.
After Commencement and final exams are compete, faculty will have until 2:00 PM on Monday, December 16, 2019, to submit grades. After that . . .
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
I wish you all the very best this Holiday Season. Hope you enjoy some well-deserved time with family and friends. For those traveling, I trust your adventures will be safe and enjoyable.
Keep Calm & Holiday On,
