Bears in Every Building Winter Gathering
The winter gathering of the Bears in Every Building was held January 31, 2020 at Old Kinderhook Resort in Camdenton, MO. Approximately 80 people including faculty and staff from the College of Education (COE) were present. The gathering consisted of educators from many areas across the state who work at all levels in education. The participants were charged with providing suggestions on how to advocate for the profession of teaching along with ways to encourage and celebrate students in local schools who choose Missouri State University.
Jennifer Baxter from Willard Public Schools and Symantha Campbell from Farmington Schools presented ideas they are already implementing in their schools. Abby Coffman and Cameryn Porzelt, elementary education majors at MSU spoke about the influence their teachers in Pre-K-12 had on their decisions to choose education as their career path. Many plausible suggestions were generated at the meeting to give the COE direction for the future.

Dean Hough shared opening remarks with a focus on appreciation for the strong collaborative partnership and expertise of the USs and CTs which is critical to the preparation of future educators. MACCE Meeting February 4, 2020
Assessment Updates: Pearson will hold an Item Review Conference in Early April for the MOGEA and Special Reading Teacher assessments. Study materials will be available late spring or early summer. This may or may not result in a cut score change for the MOGEA. Reliability is currently an issue for the MEES, however, Candidates must have this score to be recommended for certification plus APR also requires the MEES. A team, inclusive of stakeholders, will work on standardization SP20. The question of applicability to grade levels and programs will be addressed at the Review Team meeting.
In her overview, Commissioner Vandeven shared the new mission and vision statement adopted by the Board is Impacting Lives Through Education. She shared that she feels there is not an achievement gap but an opportunity gap, and five pillars have been established to address this. These pillars address Early Learning, Early Literacy, College and Career Ready, Safe and Healthy Schools, and Teachers and Leaders. Opportunity gaps are not the only concern. To address growing teacher shortages, DESE has developed the Teacher Workforce Outreach Plan. This plan contains 6 recommendations concerned with teacher recruitment and retention, and all presentations on the Workforce can be found at DESE.mo.gov by selecting Educator then Recruitment and Retention.

The AERA Invites Proposals for Its Education Research Conference Program
Education Research Conferences Proposals
Submission Deadline: March 5, 2020
The American Educational Research Association (AERA) invites proposals for its Education Research Conferences Program. Through this program, AERA awards grants of up to $35,000 for conferences intended to break new ground in substantive areas of inquiry, stimulate new lines of study on issues that have been largely unexplored, or develop innovative research methods or techniques that can contribute more generally to education research. It is anticipated that research conferences will draw upon diverse disciplines and fields of inquiry where there is relevant scientific and scholarly expertise. The program aims to foster the accumulation of knowledge, enhance dissemination, encourage innovation, and advance studies of the highest quality in education research. The call for this program has been updated for 2020, to reflect the change to a single cycle per year (previously two cycles in the Spring and Fall) and to provide more clarity and structure to those interested in submitting a proposal. More information and the full Call for Proposals can be found at: https://www.aera.net/Education-Research/Education-Research-Conferences-Program
AERA will accept proposals sent as an email attachment to EdResearchConference@aera.net no later than 11:59 Eastern Time on Thursday, March 5, 2020.
