Introductions were made. Krista Meyer talked about the upcoming spring Future Teachers of America meeting for the southwest region. This involves approximately 80 students from 5 – 8 area schools. The meeting is held from 9:00 a.m. – noon in late March or early April. The meeting was held on our campus a few years ago and she was interested in having it here again. The LC agreed to host it on our campus, and Krista asked Dean Hough provide a welcome and speak to the group. They would also like COE to provide a tour or Hill Hall and the MSU campus. COE will provide lunch at Garst. We could also provide swag and door prizes. Krista will work with Sharon on reserving a room and developing an agenda. Dean Hough noted that MSTA fall meetings are held in Columbia, but MSU might be interested in hosting that event as well; Krista agreed.
Rhonda Bishop and Matt Teeter have been discussing the possibility of allowing for more student methods experiences at Willard. Matt is also in favor of this and will provide a classroom at Willard Orchard Hills Elementary that our methods instructors can use to teach students. The LC supported this idea. Matt brought up that their district is also working on having a Parents as Teachers person at each elementary school.
Steve Jones noted that the Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning and the Specialist in Teacher Leadership might be a good fit for Willard, as well. He is looking for cohorts from various school districts that would want to have these programs easily accessible for their teachers. He is currently working with West Plains and will have a conversation with Nixa tonight. He would like to work with Willard. Matt said they would be interested and that they should pursue this further. Steve went to a Graduate College meeting yesterday to bring up registration problems students are having with paperwork when applying for graduate programs. Juli Panza agreed the process needs to be streamlined. She will join Steve at his meeting with Julie Masterson. Jef is meeting with Julie tomorrow. He is going to request that Kim Dubree join him. The goal is to make everything work out for the students.
When the Internship Academy was first started, Nixa matched what was paid to the cooperating teachers. Kim said in the Fall of this year this was discontinued and they paid a lesser amount of $170.00 instead of $240.00. The difference was paid from our budget. Dean Hough said we just need to work with them and he will talk to their superintendent.
The Career Expo/Education Career Fair 2020 is February 26, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm at the Springfield EXPO Center. Juli said we could get a table for $150 and use it to promote our graduate programs. If so, it would be best for the program coordinators to be there. Tables can be set up from 8:30 – 10:30 am. Karen would like a table, or have part of one for secondary. Dean Hough asked department heads to let Sharon and Juli know who would like to go by next Thursday, February 6. He will cover however many tables we need. Juli said there is an optional lunch buffet and RSVPs are due by February 14.
The next Staff Professional Development is Friday, March 27, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm, PSU 315. Stephanie is working on the program. She had invited Yvania Garcia-Pusateri, Chief Equity Diversity Officer for Springfield Public Schools. Yvani was formerly the Executive Director of Multicultural Programs at our university. Stephanie also asked her to have an activity. Dean Hough encourages all staff to attend. He also brought up that there is a diversity goal on all staff ADPs, which needs to be more meaningful for them.
Around the Table
Dean Hough
As of today, our college needs to start working on how to cut $195,649.00 from the FY 21 Budget. Each college will need to cut 2%. The COE Budget Committee and Faculty Advisory Council have already placed tenure-track faculty lines at the top of their priorities. We may hold a line open for one of our searches. Dean Hough asked everyone to begin considering suggestions. LC has already identified the following:
- Reduce online class incentive by half
- Reduce the number of low enrollment summer school sections
- Increase class sizes
- Redeploy some staff when appropriate
James Satterfield
The ATLL Search Committee has submitted a name for the position. Regarding the Counseling Assistant Professor search, phone interviews should start next week. James and Denise will going to St. Louis to discuss Bear Partnership on Tuesday. So far they have 48 applications.
Janice Duncan
Kindergarten orientation for next year was held last night. There are 24 openings and 35 families out of 45 attended. They are also looking at contacting families regarding other grade level openings for next year.
Denise Cunningham
They are attending the annual Teacher Placement Day on March 13, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm, Gohn Hall in West Plains, hosted by the Missouri State University Teacher Education Completion Program. Students in their final semester of an education program and education program graduates are invited to attend. The search committee for the Clinical Instructor positions is in the process of scheduling interviews.
Karen Engler
She listened to a DESE webinar this morning prior to coming to LC. She highlighted:
- Official APR was released today. Should be available for viewing soon.
- Assessment Update for Fall 2020 was discussed. These will need to be used when released.
The MOTAC meeting is April 9, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. The discussion will be on APRs. David and Barri will attend. Misty Grandel, teacher of the year would like to teach out to EPPs and set up a time to visit. Dean Hough would like to invite her to attend the SMSTA FTA meeting in March/April. The Spring 2020 MSU MEES training for university supervisors and cooperating teachers was held on January 21. Individuals unable to attend must complete the online training. MSU will track for completion. Karen asked if students need to be involved in this. If so, they would need a much larger venue. After a discussion Denise suggested the information for students be embedded in a class. Students complete the information online. It was decided that they do not think they could get all cooperating teachers, supervisors and students together at one time. Kim suggested to make it a compliance for students and they would be able to check that all students completed it. Karen, Barri, and Kim will work on it.
Russ Brock
ATLL hosted the Southwest Curriculum Directors meeting and it went well. Russ attended a Powerful Learning Conference at which a few teachers said they were “Bears”. He asked for contact information from each of them. ATLL will be hosting a workshop, “Leading Ladies”, on April 9, from 9:00 – 11:30 am. Some of the female superintendents, Lori Wilson, Alison Pope, Mindi Moss and Chris Johnson will discuss what it takes to work your way up to become a superintendent. On April 14, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, they are hosting “Ask a Teacher”, at Meyer Alumni Center. This is an event to ask experienced teacher leaders questions about all things teaching and learning and their experiences during the first years in the profession. The current and former teachers of the year will be there. For more information, email Tracy Gross at tracygross@missouristate.edu.
Barri Tinkler
A group of faculty are working on piloting a special education program, Pathways for Paras. This will be discussed at the Dean’s Community and School Advisory Council meeting, which will be held next Wednesday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Kentwood Hall, Crystal Ballroom. Jon Turner, Tami Arthaud, and Barri will be on a panel for the discussion. The College of Education will have a reception at the 2020 AERA Annual Meeting in San Francisco on April 18, 2020. The reception will be from 7:00 – 8:30 pm, in the Essex Room at the Westin St. Francis Hotel. Fifteen MSU faculty members are attending. Department Heads were asked to check with their faculty regarding inviting colleagues from other colleges/universities who will be at AERA to attend the reception. A post card will be emailed to them and the information will also be tweeted. Barri is working with Jim Taylor on the SCUF proposal for this year. They are basically asking for things we have asked for in the past. They are also asking for a small amount of funds that would be available for students that need assistance with paying for Taskstream.
Jef Cornelius-White
A few revisions have been made to the Students Mental Health, Family, and Community Support graduate certificate that has been submitted for approval. They are still on track and hopefully the certificate will be approved and offered in the fall. A conversation is continuing regarding the establishment of a school psych degree.
