Assessments Proposed by the EPP Assessment Committee
The EPP Assessment Committee proposes introducing two new instruments to measure students’ attitudes toward diversity personally and professionally. The plan is to have students entering teacher education take surveys as pretests and then at the end of student teaching as posttests. The two new instruments (attached) are the Personal and Professional Beliefs about Diversity Scales (Pohan and Aguilar, 2001) and both have been deemed valid.
These instruments would be used in addition to the dispositions and diversity proficiencies self-assessments already in place. The EPP Assessment Committee believes these instruments will provide programs with more detailed information about the beliefs that teacher education students have about diversity and their level of sensitivity towards some specific topics (cultural, linguistic and social diversity, ability, gender, sexual orientation and religion).
The results would help inform future development of specific multicultural education content. The surveys could be administered through Taskstream or Qualtrics and would be facilitated by the Office of Assessment Accreditation and Data Management. While the Assessment Committee is currently updating the language, only minor changes are expected going forward.
