Denise introduced Dr. John Shaughnessy, St. Louis Regional Supervisor for the Internship Academy. The Internship Academy has 65 students to interview this year. The St. Louis area has 8 students this year and should have 23 next year.
Our College needs to come up with a budget cut plan for next year. Dean Hough will meet with Financial Services on February 25th to consider options. Dean Hough told department heads we will continue with all searches, and he will figure out how to cut from ongoing salary savings. Specific details and guidelines will be discuss on February 26th at the Provost’s ALC.
Barri, Stephanie and three faculty members are working on the draft policy regarding new faculty using their start-up funds for purchasing software that has yearly renewal fees. The topic with be discussed with department faculty for their ideas/suggestions. CEFS meets tomorrow. They will keep the Dean updated.
Barri is working with Jon Turner on the paraprofessional certificate. Jon possibly has a grant to help with the certificate. He will find out soon and present on it to Administrative Council next week.
The South Central Associate Superintendent meeting was on Tuesday. Dean Hough, the department heads, Robin Koerber, Rhonda Bishop, and Dennis Lancaster attended the meeting which included 7 superintendents. Dean Hough’s administrative team shared plans to create a program for paraprofessionals to earn a teaching certificate. The superintendents requested the COE administrative team bring all secondary students back under our college. The team noted that this was not a current discussion point at MSU, indicating that the relationship between secondary education programs and the College was very positive. Even so, the superintendents suggested deans in other colleges meet with them to discuss options for filling high need areas. Dean Hough agreed to carry this message back to the Provost. The group discussed taking some of the other deans and Dennis Lancaster to meet with them again, possibly in August when the deans meet with West Plains personnel.
Dean Hough suggested everyone participate in the West Plains Teacher Placement Day coming up on March 13, 2020. Dean Hough also asked the superintendents how we might encourage more students from that area to pursue education as a career. He then explained the Bear in Every Building (BIEB) initiative to the superintendents and asked Rhonda Bishop during LC to send an email to the group inviting them to encourage their staff to participate. The Dean also suggested to the LC that he and/or others visit the South Central schools to discuss our education programs with their students. He suggested that we create more positive discussions on teaching with parents and students. Dean Hough will work with Rhonda and BIEBS from their area to work on presentations. Russ mentioned that they have “Seventh Graders Go to Work” events and possibly the students in the south central area could attend elementary schools and observe the teachers/classrooms.
