Jessica Heinz and Kai Ramer discussed the potential opportunities regarding our COE website home page. This is the main document they want to update for us, but may update some other information also. A discussion followed with LC members.
Prospective students are easily able to apply to the university from our home page. This has been touted as exemplary by the marking consultants employed by MSU. However, we still have a lot of old information on pages throughout the web. The entire website needs to be updated. Major initiatives need to be on the home page and should include A Bear in Every Building, Bear Partnership, and the Internship Academy. These should be COE highlights. The website needs to be more user friendly to students and families. Photos are outdated. Kai said that it is best to feature program photos and to have a better search engine. It should be education focused. A 30 – 45 second video would also be good to have. The Dean would like to have information on resources on how to make college affordable. We also need all of the financial aid and scholarships grouped together, not by department. All COE student organizations should be in one section. Information should not be on the website unless it is of interest to students and families. Less is more. Jessica and Kai are going to work with the COE graduate assistant, Joey, and Juli Panza.

The School and Community Advisory Council meeting was held last night. A meeting needs to be planned to go West Plains School District to meet with their superintendent, Dr. Lori Wilson. Their district is willing to pay our student interns $12,000.00 per year to be at their schools. They would follow their district calendar and work with a master teacher. Robin and Sarah would like to go. Dennis mentioned they have some student residence housing available if needed. David will work with Denise on a proposal and plan a meeting to West Plains including Sarah and Robin.
Dr. Richard Asbill, Cassville Superintendent, would like us to come up with a program for para professionals to become teachers. Barri volunteered to work on this following the CAEP visit. Kim would also be involved. Dennis mentioned we might want to have the program available on the West Plains campus.
Denise Cunningham
There are now 302 “Bears” in Every Building signed up. Of those, 191 signed up in the last 24 hours. On October 21st, Diana and others are having the MOETS Conference on the West Plains campus. So far they have over 60 students signed up to attend. A postcard regarding Bear Partnership to look at. James is working with the Pattonville superintendent. Cara Smith is involved in the Child Life National Disaster Relief Organization and is currently helping children in the Bahamas due to the damage there from Hurricane Dorian. She should be back next week.
Sharon Lopinot
The Staff Professional Development meeting is today at 11:30 a.m. The topic is how staff can support recruitment efforts. The Dean will be planning another Staff Professional Development meeting in the spring. A topic for the meeting was discussed in the office and involved how to plan a meeting/event from start to finish.
Stephanie Huffman
Their department Facebook page is up and running. Kayla Lewis, Reesha Adamson, and Sascha Mowrey will be presenting together. It is great to see cross-departmental research being conducted. Their department is working on program brochures. They were stopped when submitted to Printing Services and referred to the Marketing Department regarding branding. It is going to be expensive to have everything reconfigured.
James Satterfield
Two international initiatives are in the early stages. He is working on a New Partnership Institution and a COE International Summer School. We would go there and they would come here. Jim Baker may match funding.
Emmett Sawyer
From the Community and Schools Advisory Council meeting last night:
If a student completes their year-long internship at Nixa and is hired by them, they will start at the second level of pay. Dr. Richard Asbill, Cassville Superintendent, wants to meet to discuss the MAT, MATL and SETL.
Juli Panza
She has discussed with others the possibility of having program brochures with less information on them and a QR code which would access more information. The Majors Fair had a good turnout. A number of faculty were there. They did have 500 students less than the typical number. COTA is in February. Two of our COE students were accepted in the Peace Corps. They are working on phone interviews for their open position.
Travis Marler
Information on program completers was submitted to our program coordinators.
Russ Brock
Tracy Gross was in attendance at the event where the State Teacher of the Year was announced and recognized. Melissa Grandel teaches English and Language Arts in Fordland School District and also attended their schools growing up. At their next ATLL staff meeting, information on Bears in Every Building will be provided so it is available when they have professional development sessions. A survey was sent to early childhood teachers to ask what they would like to see offered for credit at future workshops.
Dennis Lancaster
They had a good visit with the Dean and others at their meeting in West Plains and would like to continue to meet periodically. The Ozark Teacher Corp is having a workshop at the Art Museum in Springfield tomorrow.
Janice Duncan
Greenwood homecoming is this week and very busy. The brunch is on Saturday. They have their first student from Saudi Arabia and have a number of students from Nigeria.
Dean Hough
Greenwood will be discussed at the next Board of Governors Programs and Planning Committee meeting. The meeting starts at 8:30 a.m., on October 25th. They are discussing retention at Administrative Council meetings. Ryan DeBoef went to the University of Kentucky in Lexington. They have a high student retention rate. Their faculty make a commitment to their students. We need to work with our faculty on this. Our rate is approximately 77%. A number of our students leave due to a life event, such as finances. What could be our approach? The Dean is planning a spring faculty meeting. Part of the program will be on recruitment and retention.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 a.m. Barri handed out a draft copy of the CAEP site visit sessions for November 4 and 5 to discuss with those that stayed. Notes were made and Barri will get back to everyone regarding revisions.
