Missouri State University’s department of criminology and criminal justice is a sponsor for the seventh annual Stop the Violence Conference, set for 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5 on Zoom.
Stop The Violence is a community call to action. Attendees will receive education and tools that will help address interpersonal violence and make the community a safer place for everyone.
Abilities First also sponsors the event.
Keynote presenters
Jessica Naslund, a licensed clinical social worker, and Chris Worth, a community organizer, will focus on building capacity to work with survivors of all abilities.
Wambui Bahati, an inspirational speaker, author and entertainer, will focus on building professionals’ capacity to work with all people. Bahati will present strategies that will avoid funneling people with disabilities or mental health issues to programs designed for children or other populations.
Other conference topics include:
- Exploitation of the elderly and people with disabilities from a legal perspective.
- Sex trafficking.
- Abuse of children with disabilities.
- The long-term impact of relationship abuse and violence.
Paula Rector, senior instructor of criminology at Missouri State, will moderate a panel of interpersonal violence survivors.
The event is free and open to the public. Counselors, social workers, law enforcement, attorneys, and other professionals can earn continuing education credits.
