Human Rights Day Meet and Greet
All Welcome to Attend
The Mayor’s Commission on Human Rights and Community Relations will host a meet and greet on December 10, 2011 from 11am to 2pm at Big Momma’s Coffee and Espresso Bar located at 217 E. Commercial Street, Springfield, MO.
Across the globe, December 10th is recognized as Human Rights Day. What makes this day significant is that it commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). After World War II, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10 1948 in an effort to prevent atrocities against all mankind and it stands today as the largest known document across the globe.
Human Rights have been the foundation in establishing the United States for over 200 years. In America we understand that the existence of human rights help secure the peace, promote the rule of law, strengthen democracies, combat crime against humanity and prevent humanitarian crisis.
“Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places close to home, so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any map of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm, or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman and child seek equal justice, equal opportunity and equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt
Please come out in recognition and support of Human Rights this December 10th
