For this week’s SAC Film we travel back to a simpler time, when Mark McGwire was breaking records and Will Smith was releasing “Gettin’ Jiggy wit it” instead of remaking classic movies starring his offspring. Mulan was released in 1998 and tells the story of a woman becoming a man. Wait let me rephrase that. Mulan tells the story of a Chinese woman that enters into the army in place of her father, and becomes one of China’s greatest heroes in the process. The film is Disney’s retelling of the popular Chinese folk tale Hua Mulan, and stars the voice of Eddie Murphy as a disgraced dragon sent to dissuade Mulan of her plan. Though he soon finds out Mulan is not easily dissuaded. Hijinx ensue.
The film is tracking at 86% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a consensus of “Exploring themes of family duty and honor, Mulan breaks new ground as a Disney film, while still bringing vibrant animation and sprightly characters to the screen.” Catch it at the PSU Wednesday, April 13 and Sunday, April 17 at 9PM.
