African American Heritage Month
February
Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

7:30 PM Feb. 18-19, 22-26 & 29
2:30 PM Feb. 21 & 28
Craig Hall Balcony Theatre
Originally published in 1897, Chekhov’s classic existential comedy is resonating with contemporary audiences, thanks to this fresh new translation in everyday English. Vanya and his niece Sonya have devoted their lives to managing the family’s country estate. A large share of the proceeds has gone to support the urban lifestyle of Sonya’s father, Professor Serebryakov, whose late wife was Vanya’s sister. Now retired, the self-absorbed professor has returned to the estate with his beautiful, much younger second wife, Yelena. Their arrival disrupts the work of the farm and unleashes a torrent of long sublimated emotions. Both Vanya and his friend Astrov, the village doctor, fall under the spell of the sensuous Yelena, while Sonya confesses her unreciprocated love for Astrov, and all must face their regrets and unfulfilled dreams. Uncle Vanya plumbs the depths of the human psyche with insight, wit and compassion.

Community Involvement Fair
The Community Involvement Fair is co-sponsored by Community Involvement & Service, Citizenship and Service-Learning, Public Affairs Support and the Career Center. This event invites community agencies to come on campus and exchange information with Missouri State students, faculty, and staff. The goal of the Community Involvement Fair is to foster a relationship between the Missouri State Community and local organizations.
- Faculty & Staff – Are you looking to engage your students in meaningful service and learning opportunities or internships? Promote this event to your students and attend yourself!
- Student Organizations – Take advantage of this opportunity early in the semester to make some great community contacts for volunteer and internship opportunities. These community agencies love working with student groups on initiatives that serve our community.
- Student Volunteers – Are you looking to enrich your college experience through community service or an internship? Are you passionate about a particular social issue? Come by the Community Involvement Fair and learn about organizations making a difference in our city, state, nation, and the world!
This year, our Fall Community Involvement Fair will be on Wednesday, February 24th in the Plaster Student Union. The event will run from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Check-in for agencies will begin at 8:30 a.m.
Missouri State Basketball Recycling
Every year Missouri State participates in RecycleMania, a national competition between colleges and universities to reduce waste and increase recycling. In celebration of RecycleMania, we will be raising awareness and increasing recycling at the Men’s Home Basketball games in February.
Volunteers will stand at the recycling stations before and after the game and during half time to help patrons determine what is recyclable. All volunteers should meet inside the main entrance to JQH arena 15 minutes early to get their location assignment and instructions. As a bonus, volunteers will be able to watch the game from the student section between their shifts.
Please see the sign-up genius for dates and times available.
