“Nikifor Krynicki: 50 Water Colors” Exhibit
April 18, all day, Meyer Library Room 107
A collection of watercolor paintings by Nikifor Krynicki (1895-1968), a naïve painter from Krynica, Poland, will be on display in Missouri State University’s Duane G. Meyer Library from Tuesday, April 14th to May 13th, 2016. Nikifor’s paintings display a wide variety of religious architecture, self-portraiture and rural scenes.
The watercolors are on loan from the Alfons Karny Collection. Alfons Karny (1901-1989), a well-known Polish sculptor and collector of Nikifor’s work, was the great uncle of Missouri State University Art & Design professor, Jacek Fraczak, the owner and coordinator for this exhibition. Before arriving in Springfield, the exhibition was shown in Buffalo, NY and Chicago, IL.
“I decided to bring the set of fifty Nikifor’s artworks for a show in Springfield in order to share its unique value with our students and the community of art lovers of south-west Missouri. (Alfons Karny) created this collection because he could recognize a great artistic value in the art of someone neglected by the society. Nikifor is presently regarded as one of the greatest naïve artists of the 20th century,” said Fraczak.
The exhibit is free and open to the public.

President’s Concert: MOZART’s REQUIEM and POULENC’S GLORIA
April 30, 7:30 – 9: 30 PM, Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts
The Missouri State University Department of Music presents its annual Masterworks concert featuring two amazing works – Poulenc’s Gloria, and Mozart’s Requiem. The concert features the MSU Symphony Orchestra and Grand Chorus and is conducted by Cameron F. LaBarr, director of choral studies. The orchestra will be prepared by newly appointed director of orchestral studies, Christopher Kelts. Featured inGloria will be MSU alumna and renowned soprano, Sarah Tannehill. Performing the solos in the Requiem will be MSU voice faculty members Carol Chapman, soprano, Ann Marie Wilcox-Daehn, mezzo-soprano, and Chris Thompson, baritone, along with Brandon Nase, tenor, of New York City.
The Gloria by Francis Poulenc, scored for soprano solo, large orchestra, and chorus, is a setting of the Roman Catholic Gloria in excelsis Deo text. One of Poulenc’s most celebrated works, the Gloria was premiered in January, 1961 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under conductor Charles Münch. The Requiem Mass in D Minor by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was composed in Vienna in 1791 and left unfinished at the composer’s death on December 5. A complex mythology has grown up regarding who might have actually completed the work.
