Hispanic Heritage Month
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period. Check the MSU Master Calendar for campus events celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.

Mexican Independence Day (El Día de Independencia)
On September 16, 1810, in the small town of Dolores, in the province of Guanajuato in Mexico, a handful of people were summoned by a parish priest to take up arms against the Spanish colonial government. This began the fight for independence that ended 350 years of Spanish rule. To this day, the church bell that was used to call people to revolt hangs in the National Palace in Mexico City and is rung on the eve of September 16 by the President.
Recognizing the Festival/Holiday: Celebrated by people of Mexican origin throughout the world and in such places in the United States as East Los Angeles, Austin, and El Paso, this is a day when Mexican Americans often hang Mexican flags at their homes. In addition to parades and fairs, the day’s festivities always involve traditional antojitos, most aptly described as a variety of finger foods, Mexican candies, and punch. Punch, ponche, is a drink made of fruits that are in season: guayabas, sugarcane, raisins, and apples. The music of mariachi bands is also common.

The Moon Festival dates back over 3,000 years, to moon worshiping in the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC). Ancient Chinese emperors worshiped the moon in the autumn, as they believed that the practice would bring them a plentiful harvest the next year. Like many Chinese festivals, the Mid-Autumn Festival originated from a legend. This particular festival celebrates the beautiful yet sad story of Chang E, the Moon Lady.
Chinese people celebrate on this day when the moon is usually at its fullest and brightest. A full and bright moon symbolizes completion, so the Mid-Autumn Festival is a day for family or dear ones to be together. Traditionally on this day, families gather together to admire the bright moon and eat moon cakes with oolong or jasmine tea.=

Cultural Corner: Elections Around the World

In the midst of the 2016 Presidential election, international students representing five countries will explore and share the differences in voting and electoral processes in their countries. This event is designed to gather all students and the campus community to gain new perspectives and broaden our knowledge of world cultures.
OCF Lecture Series Presents Larry Campbell

The Ozarks Celebration Festival Lecture Series concludes on Sept. 15 with guest lecturer Dr. Larry Campbell presenting “Rollin on the River!: A 45-day exploration of the Missouri River.”
Dr. Campbell began his exploration earlier this summer at the official source of the river at Three Forks, Montana, and followed it to its confluence with the Mississippi River near West Alton, Missouri.
Dr. Campbell is an Emeritus Professor from Missouri State University’s Department of Mathematics. An avid photographer, he has photographed nature in its glory in settings throughout the world.
