Rainy Holiday Weekend Suggestions

August 31, 2012 by Julie Hill

Happy Labor Day Weekend! For those of you traveling back home, drive safely. For those of you staying here, don’t worry, there are tons of things to do around town so put your rain boots on and go exploring in Downtown Springfield.

For the video gamers, instead of sitting in front of your TV all weekend, get your game on at 1984 Arcade on East Walnut Street. They charge $5.00 at the door for ‘all you can play,’ and are known for having the best variety of 80s arcade games. They also offer 25 cent pinball and have a snack bar.

For the movie buffs, visit one of the many theaters in Springfield. My personal favorites are The Palace (perfect for those of us who were recently cut off from our parent’s credit cards), Campbell Sixteen, and in keeping with the downtown theme: Hollywood Theaters College Station. Don’t forget to bring your student ID for a discount.

For the rest of you, try one of downtown Springfield’s prized restaurants. For a more historic setting, visit Taylor’s for an old-fashioned steak burger, Aunt Martha’s Pancake House for the best pancakes in town, or Ebbet’s Field for a burger named after your favorite baseball star. For a more relaxed and laid back setting, visit Aviary’s Creperie, Bambinos, or Nonna’s Italian Café.

Enjoy the rain this weekend and make sure you’re back for class on Tuesday!

Springfield Stuff: Movies in Founders Park

August 24, 2012 by Julie Hill

Looking for something to do this weekend? Head downtown at dusk and enjoy the brisk adventures of The Lorax tonight at Founders Park. For five dollars, you can bring your lawn chairs, blankets… and maybe your significant other.

Did you miss the first show? Come back tomorrow night for the last show of the season, Captain America. The shows start at dusk but show up a little early to see some talented local filmmakers’ work.

Founders Park is located at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Water Street (330 E. Water Street). The site is in the area where the development of Springfield began. You can get there on the Pink Bearline shuttle, which runs 6pm-2am Friday & Saturday nights continuously from PSU to downtown with stops at Florence/Cherry, Elm Street, Kentwood, Park Central Square, and Hammons Student Center.

For more information, visit http://www.springfieldmo.gov/founders/movies.html

Who’s on Campus This Week?

June 19, 2012 by Julie Hill

As you walk through campus this week, you are likely to hear an interesting combination of music, art discussion, bouncing basketballs, and arguments from debate students (this year’s policy topic is “Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its transportation infrastructure investment in the United States”).

We also welcome incoming freshmen and their families: SOAR #3 finished up today, and SOAR#4 starts tomorrow.

Bears Soccer Girls Team Camp started today. Bears Basketball brings in their Elite camp on Saturday, and Lady Bears Basketball Young Players arrive on Monday.  Also on Monday, approximately 150 singers will liven up campus during Choral Camp.

I wish I was going to camp… don’t you?
