African American Heritage Month

February
Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

PLAY – Uncle Vanya

7:30 – 10:00 PM February 18, Craig Hall Balcony Theatre
Originally published in 1897, Chekhov’s classic existential comedy is resonating with contemporary audiences, thanks to this fresh new translation in everyday English. Vanya and his niece Sonya have devoted their lives to managing the family’s country estate. A large share of the proceeds has gone to support the urban lifestyle of Sonya’s father, Professor Serebryakov, whose late wife was Vanya’s sister. Now retired, the self-absorbed professor has returned to the estate with his beautiful, much younger second wife, Yelena. Their arrival disrupts the work of the farm and unleashes a torrent of long sublimated emotions. Both Vanya and his friend Astrov, the village doctor, fall under the spell of the sensuous Yelena, while Sonya confesses her unreciprocated love for Astrov, and all must face their regrets and unfulfilled dreams. Uncle Vanya plumbs the depths of the human psyche with insight, wit and compassion.
Written by Anton Chekhov
Translated by Paul Schmidt
Directed by Melanie Dreyer-Lude

Jazz at the Q

8:00 pm – 10:00pm, February 19, 308 W. Commerical St. Springfield MO
Chris Burnett, a prominent alto saxophonist, jazz musician and composer, who began his active career at 18 years old as a performing artist with the US Army Bands Career Program, is performing live starting at 8pm located at the Q Enoteca (308 W Commercial St, Springfield, MO 65803)
Chris Burnett is an alto saxophonist, composer, recording artist and educator who began his active career at the age of 18 years old when he was selected by audition and accepted for musical service as a performing artist with the US Army Bands Career Program, where he performed and toured with several noteworthy professional US military band organizations for audiences at numerous locations in the continental United States and overseas. Subsequently, Mr. Burnett has continued as a life-long learner while performing music professionally for over three decades.
Born in Olathe, Kansas, he was ultimately raised in Paola after his family had traveled extensively in early childhood and lived at such places as: France, Michigan and Colorado. His studies in instrumental music began seriously under clarinetist, James R. Fuchs. Mr. Fuchs was the local school band director who exposed him to professional saxophone players like Charles Molina and Gary Foster during those formative years. He has studied with numerous significant teachers and at the Armed Forces School of Music, Webster University, Columbia College, Berklee College of Music, and American University.
Mr. Burnett is a former director of the Jazz Ensemble Program at Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly University of Missouri-Rolla); a former director of the NATO Jazz Ensemble; and, a former featured performing member of the Faculty Jazz Ensemble of the Armed Forces School of Music that was under the direction of Maurice Williams, Jr. (former leader of the Army Blues Jazz Ensemble).
As a composer, Mr. Burnett is the 1995 5-Star Award of Merit Winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs for his original composition and arrangement for big band, titled “Daedalus”. “Daedalus” was initially recorded by the award-winning Engineer Center Jazz Ensemble and published on the highly acclaimed compact disc recording by the 399th US Army Band, titled “Essayons” – which was also the first-ever CD recording released in that particular military band’s history. Today, Chris Burnett has established a credible reputation as one of the finest alto saxophonists of his generation and is considered among Kansas City’s most respected jazz artists. He has two commercial CD recordings available on the Artists Recording Collective label.

Community Involvement Fair

The Community Involvement Fair is co-sponsored by Community Involvement & Service,  Citizenship and Service-Learning, Public Affairs Support and the Career Center. This event invites community agencies to come on campus and exchange information with Missouri State students, faculty, and staff. The goal of the Community Involvement Fair is to foster a relationship between the Missouri State Community and local organizations.

  • Faculty & Staff – Are you looking to engage your students in meaningful service and learning opportunities or internships?  Promote this event to your students and attend yourself!
  • Student Organizations – Take advantage of this opportunity early in the semester to make some great community contacts for volunteer and internship opportunities.  These community agencies love working with student groups on initiatives that serve our community.
  • Student Volunteers – Are you looking to enrich your college experience through community service or an internship?  Are you passionate about a particular social issue?  Come by the Community Involvement Fair and learn about organizations making a difference in our city, state, nation, and the world!
This year, our Fall Community Involvement Fair will be on Wednesday, February 24th in the Plaster Student Union.  The event will run from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Check-in for agencies will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

May 1-31
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian-Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).

Like most commemorative months, Asian-Pacific Heritage Month originated in a congressional bill. In June 1977, Reps. Frank Horton of New York and Norman Y. Mineta of California introduced a House resolution that called upon the president to proclaim the first ten days of May as Asian-Pacific Heritage Week. The following month, senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced a similar bill in the Senate. Both were passed. On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration. Twelve years later, President George H.W. Bush signed an extension making the week-ling celebration into a month-ling celebration. In 1992, the official designation of May as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month was signed into law.

The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

Civility Conversation

Tuesday, April 28 at 6:45pm, Temple Hall 002
In the past few weeks an incredible need for the study of communication in the political context has developed.  In the recent Springfield municipal elections hope and fear appeals were used with abandon, identity politics were turned into public trials, and there is now a greater need for the study of these messages, their construction, and effect than ever.

There’s one word that must be kept in mind at all times when engaging in public discourse: CIVILITY.

We will explore what it is, what it means, and how we talk about politics. We will talk about our Public Affairs Mission. We will be moderating this and it will be a safe space for all views, but it is notan issue discussion, it is about how we talk about issues.

Dr. Mike Stout, Director of Missouri State’s Center for Community Engagement, will be in attendance to moderate and help us talk about civility.

Dr. LeAnn Brazeal will be present to address the question of civility online and in regards to youth.

Communications Professor Elizabeth Dudash-Buskirk will be helping to conduct and moderate the event.

We will talk about message construction, engaging with others, diverse viewpoints, and how to effectively communicate disagreements without being disagreeable.

St. Baldrick’s: Fundraiser for Childhood Cancer Research

Wednesday, April 29 at 6pm, PSU Ballroom
Join us for our 3rd annual St. Baldrick’s fundraiser as we work to support childhood cancer research!

St. Baldrick’s is an organization that raises money by hosting events across the country in which participants raise money to shave their headsto support children battling cancer. All of the proceeds from the events go towards childhood cancer research. It is important to note that participants raising money DO NOT have to shave their heads as any donations contribute to the greater cause, which is what we are all about! All shaving or cutting of hair will be conducted by licensed hair professionals.

The event will also have a variety of prizes and activities. We are looking for potential shavees and people who would be willing to help raise money for this cause.  If shaving your head does not interest you, you may also choose to have a portion of your hair cut to donate to an organization of your choice. Again, raising money DOES NOT mean that you have to cut your hair or shave your head.  If you choose to donate your hair, then you must set up the logistics and follow the guidelines set by the organization you will be donating your hair to.

If you are interested in learning more or want to help us reach our goal please visit. https://www.stbaldricks.org/events/mypage/9961/2015.

The Global Freshwater Challenge: New Solutions for a Thirsty World

Wednesday, April 15 at 12pm, PSU Theater
Around the world, signs of water trouble abound. Rivers are running dry, lakes are shrinking and groundwater is being depleted. Climate change is altering the global water cycle. The question arises: can we meet the food, energy and water needs of our growing population, while at the same time sustaining the ecosystems that support our economies and the web of life on the planet?  Dr. Sandra Postel will explain that the answer is yes, but will require a transformation in how we use, manage, and value freshwater.

Sandra Postel directs the independent Global Water Policy Project and lectures, writes and consults on global water issues. In 2010, she was appointed Freshwater Fellow of the National Geographic Society, where she serves as the Society’s lead water expert. Postel is co-creator of Change the Course, the national freshwater conservation and restoration campaign that is being pioneered by National Geographic and its partners and piloted in the Colorado River Basin.

Postel is the author of several acclaimed books, including the award-winning “Last Oasis,” which appears in eight languages and was the basis for a PBS documentary. She has authored more than 100 articles for popular and scholarly publications, from “Science and Natural History” to “Foreign Policy” and “Ecological Applications.” The recipient of several honorary degrees, Postel has also been named a Pew Scholar in Conservation and the Environment and one of the “Scientific American 50” for her contributions to water policy.

Previously, Postel served as visiting senior lecturer at Mount Holyoke College and as director of the college’s Center for the Environment. She has appeared in dozens of television and radio shows nationally and internationally, as well as in some half dozen films, including the BBC’s “Planet Earth” and Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The 11th Hour.”

This presentation sponsored by the College of Natural and Applied Sciences, Department of Biology, Department of Geography, Geology and Planning, and the Ozarks Environmental and Water Resources Institute.

How to Make a Difference in the Lives of Sex Trafficking Victims

Wednesday, April 15 at 7:30pm, PSU Theater
It is estimated that more than 100,000 children are being sold into sex-trafficking in the United States alone. Toshia Shaw, a survivor of sex trafficking, decided being an onlooker was not good enough and became a dedicated person in making a difference in one child’s life. Join Shaw, executive director of Purple W.I.N.G.S., as she shares insight and awareness of how you can make a difference by lending your voice to raise awareness, sending a Tweet or taking it one step further…by mentoring.  This event sponsored by the Department of Theater and Dance and the Department of Media Journalism and Film

Toshia Shaw is a behavioral health expert and author who has coached women through drug addiction, sexual assault, abuse and other traumatic experiences that shape the way they view themselves and the world around them. She is the founder and executive director of Purple W.I.N.G.S., a 501 c (3) multicultural nonprofit organization whose acronym stands for Women Inspiring Noble Girls Successfully. In addition to her work helping young women in the Las Vegas, Nevada area, she is also founder of T3SL LLC, a business-consulting firm that serves non-profits, small healthcare organizations and the criminal justice system.

Having overcome her own personal encounters as a triumphant survivor of domestic violence and sex-trafficking, Shaw is able to understand and empower others in a very unique and personal way. As a life coach and mentor, she often calls upon her own life experiences in an effort to relate to and connect with the girls and women she serves. In 2006, she faced the heartbreaking reality of girls in her community being trafficked in staggering numbers. This was a turning point, and she felt compelled to start speaking up about the issue of domestic minor sex trafficking in Las Vegas, Nevada. She had become tired of standing by and watching girls being ignored, treated as if they were invisible. She decided it was time to give these ladies a voice and a choice.

Today, Shaw is a noted speaker and media commentator participating in segments such as Surviving Sin City on PBS, TEDx Fremont East Women, NAACP Education Forum, African American Cultural Association’s I Remember the Dream Discussion Panel and the Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP), Unlocking the Power of Relationships.

Ethics and You: Choosing How to Live Your Life

Thursday, April 16 at 11am, PSU Theater

McEwen has earned various directing awards, including the AOI International “Best of Fest” award for his film “Happy’s Last Wish” which was the follow up to the DEM Films Production, “For the Love of the Film” – winner of the prestigious George Lucas Selects Award. His feature directorial debut, “Albino Farm” received both critical and audience acclaim – and has quickly become a cult favorite among horror enthusiasts.

McEwen produced the theatrically released feature films, “Another Happy Day,” “Bernie” (starring Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey, Shirley MacLaine), and the Tribeca selected and award winning film, “Graceland” (New York Times Critic Pick). McEwen is the co-founder of Encameo, a media technology company based in New York, Los Angeles and Silicon Valley with an eye to launch on network television and film in early 2015. He also consults on various film and media projects, synergizing his expertise regarding finance, production and distribution.

When not in Los Angeles, McEwen spends time in Sydney, Australia overseeing the global development arm of his film and television production company, Charlie Baby Productions, LLC

Shatterer of Worlds, Presented by Bread & Puppet Theater

Thursday, April 16 at 7:30pm, Hammons Center West Court
Friday, April 17 at 7:30pm, Hammons Center West Court
Saturday, April 18 at 7:30pm, Hammons Center West Court
The Shatterer of Worlds: Chapel with naturalization services for applicants requesting citizenship in the shattered world, is a walkabout political performance, enveloping audience and performers alike. The performance references the moment when the first atomic bomb was dropped and Robert Oppenheimer, the chief architect of that bomb, recalled words from the Bhagavad Gita, the Hindu prayer epic: Life, the splendor of 1000 suns blazing all at once, resembling the exulted soul, is become Death, the shatterer of worlds.

Note:  The April 16 performance is open to MSU students, faculty and staff only.  Two additional performances on April 17 and 18 are open to the public.

Now in its 50th year, Bread and Puppet Theater, founded by Peter Schumann, stands as one of the nation’s oldest not-for-profit theatre companies. With its social themes and oversized “puppetry,” it is also one of the most recognizable troupes in the world. Garnering world-wide media attention during the Vietnam War, the company has become a mainstay in contemporary culture, featured in popular films such as “Across the Universe,” and serving as an inspiration for global theatre works such as “The Lion King.” Bread and Puppet’s utilization of large scale pageantry, live music and stunning visual art has contributed greatly to its global success and recognition.

Ferguson and Beyond: Race Relations in Modern America

Friday, April 17 at 12pm, PSU Theater
A recent article in The Telegraph (U.K.) was titled, “A Black President Couldn’t Stop the Ferguson Race Riots.” The article isolates a disconcerting dichotomy in American race relations, noting that beyond a gloss of progress lays a foundation still mired in intolerance, inequality and violence. The tragic events in Ferguson sparked important discussions regarding race. Yet, since the shooting of Michael Brown, troubling examples of racial tension have arisen in our communities and on college campuses. What is the current state of race relations in America? How may citizens build a more ethical, tolerant and stable foundation for American youth?  Overflow for this event will be in the PSU Ballroom West.

President Clif Smart will moderate this session with presentations by actor Iké Amadi; Matt Marinec, confidential assistant to the director, US Office of Ethics; Yu-Hsien Sharon Wu, co-founder of US-China Education and Culture Center; and Angela Hollway-Payne, principal of Dexter Elementary School in Memphis, Tennessee.

Community Partnership along with more than 30 community agencies devoted to children and families host Community Wide Play Day each April. The goal of Community Wide Play Day is to provide a positive, interactive, voluntary, FREE opportunity for children and families to interact and learn through play. Each year, the event draws more than 2,000 children and their families.

Saturday, April 18: morning and afternoon shifts are available. This is a great opportunity for groups!

Volunteers will help with event set-up and tear-down (moving tables, tent, etc). Volunteers will also greet and register visitors, collect event surveys, distribute books to children, play and interact with children and families, and distribute resource information to families.

African American History Month

February 1 – 28
Carter G. Woodson and the organization he founded, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), conceived and announced Negro History Week in 1925. The event was the first celebrated during a week in February 1926 that encompassed the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The response was overwhelming: Black history clubs sprang up; teachers demanded materials to instruct their pupils; and progressive whites, not simply scholars and philanthropists, stepped forward to endorse the effort. By the time of Woodson’s death in 1950, Negro History Week had become a central part of African American life and substantial progress had been made by bringing more Americans to appreciate the celebration. At mid-century, mayors of cities nationwide issued proclamations noting Negro History Week. The Black Awakening of the 1960s dramatically expanded the consciousness of African Americans about the importance of black history, and the Civil Rights movement focused Americans of all color on the subject of the contributions of African Americans to our history and culture. The celebration was expanded to a month in 1976, the nation’s bicentennial. President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” That year, fifty years after the first celebration, the association held the first African American History Month. By this time, the entire nation had come to recognize the importance of Black history in the drama of the American story. Since then each American president has issued African American Heritage Month proclamations.

Women’s History Month

March 1 – 31
This month pays tribute to the generations of women whose commitment to nature and the planet have proved invaluable to society. The celebration was met with positive response, and schools began to host their own Women’s History Week programs. The next year, leaders from the California group share their project at a Women’s History Institute at Sarah Lawrence College. Other participants not only became determined to begin their own local Women’s History Week projects but also agreed to support an effort to have Congress declare a national Women’s History Week. In 1981, Sen. Oran Hatch (R-UT) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) cosponsored the first Joint Congressional Resolution proclaiming a “Women’s History Week.” In 1987, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to expand the celebration to the entire month of March. Since then, the National Women’s History Month Resolution has been approved every year with bipartisan support in both the House and Senate.

Irish American Heritage Month

March 1 – 31
March is designated as Irish American Heritage Month to recognize the contribution that Irish immigrants and their descendants have played in the formation of our Nation. Among those contributions are nine signers of the Declaration of Independence, over twenty of Washington’s generals, the first man to hold a commission in the United States Navy, over 190,000 Irish born Americans who fought in the Civil War, pioneering women such as Nellie Bly and Christa McAuliffe, the inventor of the modern submarine and 253 Medal of Honor recipients who list the place of their birth as Ireland.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

March 1 – 31
March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month thanks to a 1987 Presidential Proclamation which was the direct result of the advocacy efforts of The Arc. A lot has changed since then: more people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) are living and thriving in their communities rather than in institutions, there are more opportunities in education and employment, more protections in health care, the legal system and other areas of human rights, there are more positive and accurate portrayals of people with I/DD in the arts, the list goes on. But we must remember that many of those advancements were hard won. Self-advocacy and advocacy on behalf of those with I/DD was the impetus for many of the positive changes in our society such as the proclamation that recognized DD Awareness Month.

Boko Haram: Taming the Monster

Thursday, February 19 at 12:30pm, Strong Hall 301
This study examines the history and objectives of Boko Haram, a core Salafi religious group in Nigeria. As the study argues, Boko Haram could be understood in two paradignamic ways – as agitation against the Nigerian states and as ‘internal dialogue’ within Islam.  Beyond these analyses, the study’s main preoccupation is how best to counter and control Boko Haram and any other group that could derail Nigeria.

Dr. Bukola Oyeniyi is an assistant professor in the History Department.

Ozark Literacy Council

Monday, February 23 at 4:30pm
Ozarks Literacy Council’s mission is to raise awareness and promote literacy through free programs for adults and children in southwest Missouri. Volunteers are key for carrying out that mission.

Volunteer readers go into the Special Education Preschools in Springfield three times a semester, lead a specially designed lesson around the book, and send children home with the book and a letter to parents. The books for the sessions are pre-selected and the lesson plans are pre-written by a Special Education Teacher. Training sessions are held to cover each book, lesson plan and activity.
There are three books that are to be read to classrooms between February 23 and the end of May. Each reading takes about 30 minutes. When you volunteer for this program you are committing to reading all three books to the same classroom. The dates and times are decided between you and the teacher. There are AM and PM classes available.

A mandatory training is scheduled on February 23 from 4:30 – 5:30. Volunteers will receive their materials at this meeting and learn how to read to the children. Please e-mail Becky to sign up for a time slot and RSVP for the training.

Chinese New Year Celebration Week

Tuesday, February 17 – Satruday, February 21
Chinese New Year is an important traditional Chinese holiday celebrated at the turn of the Chinese calendar. In China, it is also known as the Spring Festival, which means the first day of the Season of Spring. Traditionally, Chinese people call the New Year “Nian” (pinyin: Nián), and “Guo Nian” (pinyin: guò Nián) is commonly used to refer to the act of celebrating the arrival of the Chinese New Year.

To celebrate Chinese New Year at Missouri State University, the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Office of China Programs together present you a week long Chinese New Year Celebration (Feb. 17 – 21). It will be a cultural fest to exhibit Chinese arts, handcrafts, music and other traditions and customs. You are invited to come to experience the new culture and to celebrate the fes`tival with us.

Runaways | Musical Production

Thursday, February 12 at 7:30pm, Coger Theatre
Friday, February 13 at 7:30pm, Coger Theatre
Saturday, February 14 at 7:30pm, Coger Theatre
Sunday, February 15 at 2:30pm, Coger Theatre
Drawn from interviews and workshops with hundreds of teens, Runaways weaves together songs, dances, soliloquies and poems to expose the harsh reality of life on the streets.

The world of the runaways is a precarious one, fraught with emotional turbulence and myriad dangers. The characters — who span the spectrum of socio-economic, racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds —talk about why they ran away from home, their daily struggles and their hopes for the future. They are at once vulnerable and tough, and their stories are both touching and unsettling.

The setting is New York City in the late 1970s, yet the situations and experiences portrayed are all too familiar for many children and youth in Springfield, and around the world, today.

Composed in the ensemble style of Hair and A Chorus Line (which were also produced by Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival/Public Theater), this musical combines childhood chants and nursery rhymes with the rhythms of rock, pop, reggae, rap, salsa, samba, country and blues.

Underlying all is the longing for a true home and family.
