Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15 – October 15
Each year, American observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15-October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also Columbus Day or Dia de la Raza, which is October 12, falls withing this 30 day period.
International Week of the Deaf
The last full week in September is Deaf Awareness Week. It is also known as the International Week of the Deaf (or International Week of Deaf People). The purpose of Deaf Awareness Week is to draw attention to deaf people, their accomplishments and their issues. During this week, many deaf organizations hold activities to celebrate and conduct public information campaigns to educate people about deafness. Companies and agencies often mark the event, and schools, colleges and universities hold awareness events.

Submit Your Quotes to Diversity and Inclusion
Message from Ken Coopwood, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion
Diversity Landmarks, named in reference to the planting of diversity placards along sidewalks and entryways, is a campus warming activity designed to promote awareness and display diversity sentiments of campus constituents.
The purpose of Diversity Landmarks is three-fold:
1. Convey diversity as a critical component of academic excellence
2. Remind us that MSU values every person and the richness that cultural perspectives and life experiences contribute to its academic mission
3. Provide an inclusive process for individual expression and recognition
Landmarks truly represent what the MSU Public Affairs mission is all about. See for yourself! Diversity Landmarks will be planted along the newly designed Kings Street corridor and throughout the corral area between Carrington and the PSU.
Each Landmark will include a quote (40 words or less), author and the name of the submitter. Original quotes are encouraged.
WHERE IS YOUR QUOTE????
If you want to participate, send us your quote! Participation in Diversity Landmarks is free and open to all students, faculty, staff and community persons. Email your quotations to: diversitylandmarks@missouristate.edu and watch for your contribution to appear on campus in the near future!

Public Affairs Week: Civic Engagement Conference
September 17 at 9:00AM-3:30PM, PSU Ballroom
Join us for an informative and thought provoking look at the issues related to opportunity and democracy here in Springfield and in the United States. Topics that will be discussed include economic opportunity and social mobility; increasing diversity and its impact on communities; the state of political and civic participation; and the ways our community has come together to address public health needs. In an age where the influence of money on politics has grown exponentially and economic inequality is at record-high levels, this conference will explore democracy and self-governance.
Although there is no charge to attend any part of this Conference, including the luncheon, please register on the PAW website (http://publicaffairs.missouristate.edu/paw/conference.htm). This applies to students, faculty, staff and community members.

Public Affairs Week: Bridging the Diversity Gap
September 15 at 9:30AM, PSU Theater
The sweeping forces of globalization present new challenges for higher education. There are a number of external pressures of globalization which demand transformation of university cultures to be more diverse and inclusive. Specifically, globalization has fostered an increasing emphasis on talent, creativity and innovation, regardless of the historic barriers of race and gender. The dramatic increases in diversity among student, faculty and staff populations coupled with the increasing demographic dominance of minority populations both at home and abroad represent a clear mandate for change. No institution of higher education can afford to waste human talent and the cultural and social richness that multicultural and other underrepresented groups bring to their campuses.
This interactive session will discuss the importance of diversity’s role in, ethical leadership, curriculum design, enhancing cultural competence, improving student success, increasing collaboration and respect across all groups, and building a rich campus environment using a “Reciprocal Empowerment” approach which empowers all to reach their full potential.
Dr. Edward E. Hubbard is President and CEO of Hubbard & Hubbard, Inc., Petaluma, CA, an international organization and human performance-consulting corporation that specializes in techniques for applied business performance improvement, Diversity Return on Investment (DROI®) measurement and analytics, instructional design and strategic organizational development. He is the author of more than 40 books.
Public Affairs Week: MSU Talks
September 16 at 4:00PM-6:00PM, PSU 313

Audience members will be allowed to make their own suggestions and interpretations of the positions and arguments that they hear. Everyone is welcome to join in to listen and/or to engage in this event where MSU talks!
