Missouri State University’s English Department and Pagination Bookshop are collaborating to host a Virtual Author Event on February 2, 2022, at 7 PM CST. It will feature Margret Sullivan, who recently published her memoir, Fragments from a Mobile Life, and will be reading excerpts from it.
Sullivan will be joined by MSU’s very own Dr. Etta Madden and Dr. John Schmalzbauer. Dr. Schmalzbauer is a professor in MSU’s Department of Religious Studies and Dr. Madden is both the Assistant Department Head of the English Department and a Professor of English. Alongside Sullivan, they will be discussing topics such as international relations and identity in relation to gender, bringing their own unique perspective to the conversation.
Sullivan, who grew up in both the Ozarks and China, has completed work and travelled all over the world, with focus on Asia, Africa, and the United States. She has completed work in international program development and advocated for wives of those in US Foreign Services. She has had work published in the Huffington Post, Foreign Service Journal, The Far Eastern Economic Review, and The Singapore Straits Times, to name a few. “Her experiences speak to history, as well as to people interested in international careers today,” Dr. Madden noted.
Sullivan provides a special perspective as a child of the Ozarks and as someone who has done so much beyond the United States. When asked what people in the community could learn from Sullivan, Dr. Schmalzbauer said, “How someone from the Ozarks can go anywhere. She knows Springfield and she knows Indonesia, Nigeria, and China and so much more.”
