A Case for Proactive Advising

Date: Thursday, May 2
Time: 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Presenter: Mark Biggs, Associate Dean, College of Arts and Letters
Location: Pummill Hall 202

When I arrived at MSU over thirty years ago, I’d experienced many great teachers, but I’d never had a meaningful session with an academic advisor. I’ve learned what a loss that was and now understand the critical connection between teaching and advising. And how especially important good advising is for both our high achieving and at-risk students. Here are a few of the most important things I’ve learned along my journey from “unaware to proactive advisor.”

Seating is limited to 42 people. Please register on the Academic Advisement Center website.

Advising Students with Transfer Credit Workshop

Date: Thursday, May 2
Time: 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Location: Plaster Student Union Room 312
Workshop Coordinator: Ross Hawkins with the Transfer Advising Committee

This workshop is for any advisor who works with transfer students or students who have or will be completing credit elsewhere. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from a campus resources panel, including representatives from Admissions, Adult Student Services, Financial Aid and Enrollment Management. Advisors will learn more about CORE 42 and the impact it has on advising transfer students. Web resources will be viewed and discussed to help advisors be efficient in advising appointments and to share information with students about the resources available online.

Registration is required and spaces are limited. Visit the Academic Advisement Center website to reserve a spot.

Advising Distance Learners

Time: 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Location: Pummill Hall 202
Facilitator and Panelist: Taleyna Morris, facilitator; Panelists: Brittany Wise, Mandi Muse, Jaime Ross and Gary Iman.

More and more of our students are taking some or all of their courses online. How do advisors develop strong relationships with distance learners? Panelists will discuss best practices and strategies for distance advising.

Seating is limited to 42 people. Register on the Academic Advisement Center website to reserve a spot.

Reflections on Advising and Teaching

Date: Thursday, May 9

Dr. Lutz retired from MSU in January. Honors Dave received include the 2008 Curtis P. Lawrence Award for Excellence in Advising, Certificate of Merit for Faculty Advising from NACADA, a Foundation Award in Teaching, and Excellence in Teaching Awards in both 1992 and 1999.
