The extreme cold weather has stressed the supply systems for electricity and natural gas in our entire region. We are working closely with City Utilities to help them maintain service as they implement extreme measures to control the load on the utility system. You can help assist in this effort:
- Turn Down the Heat – If you have a thermostat available, set it back to 68 degrees and make sure the fan settings are on “auto.”
- Pull the Plug – To avoid “phantom loads” unplug phone chargers, laptop chargers, coffee makers, tea kettles, and other appliances when they are not needed.
- Turn Off – Turn off what you cannot unplug if items are not needed. If you are the last one to leave an area, shut off the lights as you leave. Do not forget to shut off lights in closets, restrooms, corridors and similar areas.
- Close and Lock – Close and lock windows to help reduce cold drafts. Make sure doors are tightly closed.
Anything we can do to reduce the demand for electricity and natural gas will help reduce the need for more drastic measures to control the load on utility systems both on campus and in the region. You can continue to help when you are away from campus by practicing these same things in your home. Please help us by doing your part!
