I was a first-generation student when I attended SMSU from ’97 – ’01 and graduated with honors, BA in Religious Studies.
I absolutely loved my time here. My Dad retired from here; he had worked in security. I had visited the campus many times as a girl. To me being here was like being at a second home. I wanted to do so many things my freshman year. I was listed as Undecided, and my advisor helped me to learn about different events going on campus to help me narrow down the multiple interests I had. The Writing Center was where it was discovered that I had a form of dyslexia. From there I received help to learn how to work with my dyslexia and still succeed with my writing. Dr. DeVries became my advisor when I declared a Religious Studies major, and he was always there to help guide me or provide support with anything I needed. I learned that the most important thing was to ask for help no matter how small I thought the matter may be. The university was here to help and support me to be successful.
