- Grew up in a small town in southeast Kansas
- High school graduating class = 53
- Parents encouraged continuing education, but could not support financially
- Worked on-campus during my undergrad and served as a resident assistant in the residence halls for three years paying my way through college
- For graduate school, I worked as a residence hall director paying my way through college.
- This work experience is what convinced me to continue my career in higher education.
- I fell in love with the higher education mission and contributing to something bigger than myself.
- Advice to current first-generation college students navigating their career paths:
- Work hard
- Find community
- Take advantage of on-campus resources
- You can achieve your goals
- I stress three things to my own family to be successful in life:
- Love others
- Be a problem-solver
- Believe in internal locus of control (I am responsible for my successes and failures)
