My name is Dr. Keith McShan, and I am a proud first-generation student turned assistant professor here at Missouri State University (MSU). As a first-generation student, I had many accomplishments, such as being nominated for valedictorian for my undergraduate Kinesiology program, starting my own sports and marketing club, and being recognized as the Athletics and Recreation Employee of the Year. I did, however, have my learning curves of taking out student debt and learning about interest, navigating university without a car, and failing a course and having to retake the course.

If I had to advise first-generation students, it would be to take advantage of this opportunity of being a student at MSU. Getting accepted and attending an institution of higher education is not something everyone gets to do. It took me to my master’s degree to understand if I apply myself and develop really good habits, I can excel academically. As a first-generation student, there are challenges, yes, but there are great opportunities that you can take advantage of. These opportunities will not just benefit you, but your current and future family members. So please do go to the library and study and not in your dorm room. Get involved on campus. Get to know people who are different than you. Start the legacy of university graduates within your family!
