Freeze alert

April 6, 2009 by Marilyn Odneal

Well, we are keeping our fingers crossed that the temperature does not drop as low as predicted tonight. Susanne says spring is on hold, but that is a good thing. If it had been very warm the last couple of days, the hazard would be greater.

Weather.com predicts a low of 28F tonight. Our peaches are in full bloom with some petal fall. Some apples are blossoming as well, although not all cultivars. The petals have fallen from the pears. Blueberries are at bud burst, pink bud, and there are a few open flowers. Thankfully the grapes are not pushing yet. I did not see any strawberry blossoms in the patch, although I know that growers that used row covers will have recovered their beds.

From the MSU Critical Spring Temperatures Chart at http://www.canr.msu.edu/vanburen/fruitfreeze.pdf it looks like 28F is on the borderline. If we just get down to 30F, I’m guessing we will be OK. If we get down to 28F, we may have some damage. Lower than that, it doesn’t look good.

We will have to keep our fingers crossed tonight!
