Evaluating winter bud mortality of grapevines

January 23, 2018 by Marilyn Odneal

We checked primary bud mortality today of the Chambourin in the MVEC vineyard and the Chambourcin and Chardonel in the Old Foundation Vineyard. Here are the results of the percentage primary bud mortality out of 100 buds sampled in each cultivar/vineyard combo:

Chambourcin (MVEC) – 18% primary bud mortality
Chambourcin (Found) – 19% primary bud mortality
Chardonel      (Found) –   6% primary bud mortality

Randy, Shelia and Jeremy cut the dormant grape buds open to see if the primary buds are alive or dead.
