Black Walnut Research Update – Soil Moisture Probes

April 24, 2018 by Jennifer Morganthaler

The soil moisture probes were installed on Friday, April 20th. Four sets of probes were placed with each set having a probe at a depth of 12″ and at 30″. The probes are located in two different soil types and in irrigated and non irrigated rows.  The probes will be used in addition to weather data to determine irrigation needs.  A flow meter was also installed to assist with recording gallons of water applied.  Irrigation application will begin in May.

Randy and Jeremy installed the probes and t-posts to attach the sensor wires to.  A pneumatic post driver was used to assist with getting to the required depth.  A pvc “cap” was made for easy removal to read the sensors and to protect the end of the wires.
