Grape phenology and GDD accumulation

Elderberry Harvest Began July 19th

The field crew began harvesting elderberries last week.  Once harvested the berries are sent through the shaker to remove them from the stem.  Weights are taken on the berries and they are frozen for processing later in the season.  Persimmon Hill Farms processes the berries for us into Elderberry Syrup, Juice and Preserves. … [Read more...] about Elderberry Harvest Began July 19th

Mushroom bags are packed and ready to grow!

The moist straw is weighed to see how much spawn (5% by weight) needs to be added.

Yesterday (July 18) took the pasteurized straw out of the soil sterilizer (note to self - the mesh bags tended to melt so use loose straw next time). We wet it to about 65% moisture content by using the squeeze test (squeeze hard and one drop if any will come out). Preparing substrate for mushroom production

The straw bales are broken up.

Today Karly and Makayla prepared the straw to use as substrate for mushroom production in polyethylene bags. The first step was to chop the straw into 3 to 5 inch pieces by running it through a small wood chipper. Tomato grafting

Makayla (left) and Karly look forward to grafting the tomatoes!

Makayla and Karly grafted Sun Gold tomato onto Maxifort rootstocks today. If successful, these grafted Sun Gold tomatoes will be planted next to their un-grafted counterparts to see if there is a difference in growth.
