Tourism as an Economic and Well-Being Development Tool: Is the World Bank in the Tourism Business?
Thursday, April 12, 2018 11am – 12pm – Duane G. Meyer Library Room 107
Topic: This interactive seminar will provide students and faculty with key insights about today’s global focus on tourism as an economic development tool for developed and developing economies—and, in particular, the role of the World Bank in supporting tourism development.
When carefully planned and managed, sustainable tourism can contribute to improved livelihoods, inclusion, cultural heritage and natural resource protection and promote international understanding. The World Bank is truly the world’s bank—providing loans and support to developing countries in their efforts to alleviate poverty across their populations. What is the role of tourism in this challenge and how is the World Bank helping governments and the private sector to understand and manage tourism at the destination, national, regional and global levels?
The seminar will include a brief overview of the World Bank as well as examples and mini cases of support to development, management and monitoring of tourism. Examples of recent research and publications will be highlighted and future trends discussed.
