Exploring Jamaica’s tectonic history

Raised shore platforms along Jamaican coasts left behind some clues into historic tectonic events.

When walking along the southwestern coast of Jamaica, you might think of the shoreline platforms as something to stand on. 

But Dr. Kevin Evans and the Jamaican coastal studies team at Missouri State have discovered there’s more than meets the eye. They have uncovered 1,000 years’ worth of both tectonic and cultural history in those rock formations — all by examining ancient worm burrows. 

The team developed crisp imagery of the worm tubes by performing a µCT scan of the reef rock along the coast.
