PLS 548 (Latin American Politics) will be offered in the fall and Dr. Gabriel Ondetti (Political Science), who is teaching it, already has a few Global Studies students enrolled, but I would welcome more. He will be covering Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico and Venezuela, as well as a number of themes, including democratization, economic development, migration, drug trafficking/violence, racial politics, and U.S. foreign policy toward Latin America. He will also show a number of good films, including La Sierra, a documentary on paramilitary groups in Colombia, and The Revolution will not be Televised, an inside view of the 2002 attempted coup d’état against Hugo Chávez. Students also have the option of doing a 1-credit service learning component course that involves them in the local Hispanic immigrant community. He’d be happy to talk to students who want to know more about the course!
