Why did Kayla choose her program?
“I received my M.A. in religious studies from MSU in 2019, and after a career change, I am back at MSU as a Residence Life staff member and grad student! I’m working on completing a graduate certificate in conflict and dispute resolution, thanks to the credit fee waiver benefit that all MSU full time staff receive. Learning to communicate effectively and handle challenges is applicable to my career and personal life, and I look forward to utilizing this certificate in my future endeavors.”
Why choose MSU for graduate education?
“Missouri State University has excellent graduate programs and benefits for staff that make it possible and accessible for continuous learning. I have thoroughly enjoyed my graduate courses at MSU and find them to be engaging, challenging and beneficial.”
Favorite class/professor
“Psychology of Religion with Dr. Abernathy has been the most interesting class so far in the conflict and dispute resolution graduate certificate program. The psychological influence of religious traditions on our thought processes and how this impacts current cultural and political issues is fascinating.”
Overcoming challenges
“Balancing homework, a full time job and a personal life has been challenging, but I, luckily, have a great support system in my coworkers, friends and family to make it all possible!”
MSU community supports students
“The credit fee waiver for full time staff has been such a great benefit offered by MSU that supports continuous education. I also appreciate the flexibility offered by my supervisor. I am able to work full time on a schedule that allows me to come in to work earlier and have more time in the evenings to complete homework. My professors have also been understanding and welcoming towards me and other nontraditional graduate students. Last but not least, I am also thankful for my coworkers who keep me laughing when I feel a bit stressed!”
Proudest professional accomplishment
“Since I’ve switched careers from secondary education to student affairs in higher education, I would say my proudest professional accomplishment here at MSU would be getting to see the impact of my efforts everyday. Whether it is a student thanking me for assisting them with an issue in their room or a staff member acknowledging the extra effort I put into facilitating staff training, it’s just the little things that make me feel like I am accomplishing something great, one day at a time. Being nominated for the DOSA awards this year was humbling and made me feel like what I do everyday matters.”
Advice for upcoming #GradBears
“I would highly encourage anyone to pursue a graduate degree from MSU. My experiences in the graduate college in the past (religious studies) and in my current program (conflict and dispute resolution) have continued to challenge me to be a better person in all areas of my life. I have gained lifelong friendships and professional connections that are invaluable. I have also learned how to think critically and embrace complexity — skills that anyone can benefit from.”
